Maga Coffee started as a business opportunity for two farmers, Tom and Norm Shultz, when they decided to open their own farm in 1987. Norm Shultz was also the first person to Roast-n-Brew coffee in Ceres. In 1992, Maga Coffee became an employee-owned cooperative with over 60 members. In 2007, the company opened its second location in Bakersfield, California and employs 54 people there full time. Ceres is a small, rural town in Kern County, California. It was founded in 1902 by the brothers George and Clifford Kelling, who named it for their sister Ceres. The town has a population of about 4,500 people today. Ceres is located on State Route 99 east of Bakersfield. The original post office was established in 1902 and closed in 1954. The current post office was opened in 1957 and serves the community until it was closed in 1992. The first settlers to what is now Ceres were farmers who arrived from northern California during the Gold Rush era. They grew corn, beans, wheat, potatoes and other crops until World War II when they applied for forgiveness of war debts incurred during that time period. In 1946, after President Harry S Truman issued Executive Order 9981 which granted pardons to all military veterans who had served during World War II regardless of their home state or country of service-these farmers banded together to form the California Veterans Agricultural Association (CVAAA). After years of effort they were able to get re-granted permission from the government to grow cottonseed on their land which they began doing in 1949. From that point forward Ceres slowly transitioned into an agricultural center with a focus on raising livestock and diversifying its economy through processing vegetables and fruits as well as manufacturing items such as cheese, eggs and flour for local markets
