Calexico, California is a city in Baja California, Mexico. It is located on the border of Tijuana and Mexicali and is home to the NFL's Rams football team. The population of Calexico was estimated at 897,545 as of 2010. The area that now makes up Calexico was first occupied by the Nahuatl people in the 15th century. The name "Calexico" comes from the word "calaca," meaning 'sandy beach'. The city began to grow rapidly after it became part of newly founded Coahuila y Tejas state in 1834. In 1875, it became part of Alta California when that region was named for Emperor Agustín de Iturbide following his victory over Mexican forces at la Loma de Chapultepec. The city passed through several changes during its heyday as a commercial center with connections to both Baja California and Northern Mexico. During World War II, many American soldiers were stationed here due to the nearby naval base, which played an important role during World War II in terms of supplying weapons for Mexican troops fighting against Imperial Japan. After America's withdrawal from World War II, business went into decline until post-war efforts revived it with help from government investment and tourism initiatives spearheaded by then Mayor Arturo Frondizi himself. Calexico is a city in northern California and the county seat of Imperial County. The population was 71,442 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1847 by Humboldt Bay Company settlers as a small trading post on the Pacific Coast. The name comes from Spanish cala, meaning "headland." In 1868, Calexico became an independent municipality and in 1902 it merged with Imperial County to form the present-day city. The area now called Calexico was first inhabited by Native Americans including the Tongva people and Yokuts. Juan Bautista de Anza led an expedition through this territory in 1769 during his explorations of California. He named this region San Francisco Bay after Spain's King Ferdinand Magellan who had reached America two years earlier with his fleet of ships, La Galleon and Concepcion. A year later Mexican captain José Joaquin Frias explored these parts of California mineral rich but difficult country near what is now downtown Los Angeles when he discovered coal seams on July 26, 1776 while exploring northwest San Fernando Valley along present day Interstate 5 near Fullerton. In 1846, Mexico gained independence from Spain and set up its own government under President Agustín Castro y Salinas which included portions of what are today Orange and Riverside Counties as well as much of southern Santa Barbara County. At that time there were no western limits to California other than Juan Bautista Real's Province of Alta California that ran along modern day Southern Californian border NOTE: This claim does not have historical support) SoCal land east of El Centro also claimed by Mexico including most if not all of Calexico today! After more than 20 years as part of Mexican controlled territory various Anglo American exploration parties penetrated into this interior portion (yielding such names as Sierra Nevada Mountains), discovered new gold fields etc., until US Army General James Polk arrived at Monterey Peninsula on April 15th1846 with his forces to invade Mexican soil following news reports back to New York City that Napoleon III had been successful in waging war against American Independence via Commodore Perry off the coast of Peru! The news electrified many Angelenos who poured out intoformerly Spanish areas seeking employment in what would soon become known as "the Gold Rush". As word spread about fortunes to be made among those brave enougholkto venture westward into what would hereafter be known as America!, families packed their belongings onto wagons or horseback horses for weeks long drives over rugged terrain just southOf Mount Shasta dealing primarily with Indians for food, water barrels & shelter; often taking extreme measures like sleeping outside undergrowth during winter months dueTo lack thereof!.
