The Burbank Naval Air Station (BNAS) is a naval air station located in the city of Burbank, California. It is home to various manned and unmanned aircraft services. The BNAS was established on December 3, 1942 as Naval Air Station No. 1 at an area now bounded by North Avenue, East York Boulevard, South Pasadena Avenue and Lankershim Boulevard. The original mission of NAS #1 was to provide aviation training for Navy pilots and enlisted men of the United States Marine Corps; however, it soon became apparent that NAS #1 could not support the large influx of both military and civilian passengers that were necessary to meet the squadron's growing demand for airspace. In early 1944 NAS #1 was renamed Naval Air Station No. 2 after Major General James Halsey, Commanding General of Marine Corps Western Pacific Area; however this name change did nothing to improve things as the number of Aircraft operating from NAS #2 continued to grow rapidly. On February 15, 1945 NAS #2 was redesignated Naval Air Station No. 3 after Rear Admiral John Loye King who had served as Deputy Commander for Fleet Forces Europe in Washington D.C.; however again this name change had no real impact on matters asNAS#3 quickly gained a reputation as one of America's most advanced naval air stations when it came to providing 145 different types of transports with full range avionics capability including 12 torpedo bombers/light bomber squadrons each equipped with two torpedoes apiece while also housing four Short Stirling or Ford Trimount fighters each capable of deploying Hellfire missiles at up to 4500 ft AGL). In 1955 NAS #3 became known as Naval Air Station Hollywood after Rear Admiral John Loye King who had served as Deputy Commander for Fleet Forces Europe in Washington D.C.; however once again this name change had no real impact on matters because within months all three naval air stations were being referred to simply as "Burbank". In 1961 then-Secretaryial Order No 158 commanded all U S Navies Overseas (USNA) units immediately begin operation aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-64), which placed restrictions upon their flying operations ashore which would continue until 1973 when those restrictions were lifted under Project Neptune (qtd.: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Neptune).
