Burbank, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It became a city on January 1, 1997. The population was 122,651 as of the 2010 census. At its peak in 1925, Burbank had a population of over 200,000 people. The name "Burbank" means "place where the beans are grown." The first permanent settler in what is now Burbank was Hiram Powers who arrived in 1847 and built his own cabin on the north side of town. In 1853 he married Maria Morse and they founded the Powers family dynasty that ruled this area for more than seventy years. One of the most famous Burbank residents was William Hays who served as Treasurer of California from 1893-1896 and later became Governor of California from 1901-1904. From 1898 to 1907 Hays represented Los Angeles County on the Board of Supervisors and then served as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1907 to 1913. In 1915 Hollywood producer Victor Fleming purchased vast tracts of land east of Pasadena Cemetery for development into what would become Hollywoodland which included much of what is now downtown Burbank including his old studio lot (now occupied by Regal Cinemas). The land includes many prestigious streets such as Vine Street which leads to La Brea Tar Pits; Highland Avenue which runs parallel to Mulholland Drive; Western Avenue which runs perpendicular to Sunset Boulevard; and Glendale Boulevard which connects with Lankershim Boulevard near Universal Studios Park today. In 1922 Hollywood studios began production at their new location - Buena Vista Drive - with Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and United Artists all setting up shop there until it was eventually closed down by LASA in 1969 due to competition from MGM's newly built Beverly Hills Studio Park nearby. Today only a few small pieces remain including part of an original door handle used by execs at Warners during those days! The Coast Guard has been providing aid and assistance to the people of the United States since 1790. The Coast Guard is a volunteer organization, made up of civilians, law enforcement officers, and military veterans. In 1934, the Coast Guard became an official government agency in the United States. Some of the earliest gifts from members of the Coast Guard were uniforms and insignia. From 1876-1887, various Governors Generals donated clothing, supplies, or money to help finance operations on the Great Lakes. In 1935, Admiral Jesse Bowers donated four submarines to be used as coastal guard vessels. This was one of the first times that a group of countries collaborated to form a joint effort for maritime security purposes. It also marked a shift in how coast guard services were provided in relation to other federal agencies such as firefighters and police officers. From 1945-1951, Captain John Flemming gave $1 million towards fund development for both seaplanes and helicopters within the Coast Guard. This was followed by Captain Harry Caulfield who donated $1 million towards research into helicopter rescue techniques in 1957-1959. In 1969-1971 Captain James Ewingdon contributed funds towards building two new helicopters which would later become known as MH-60R Black Hawk helicopters. Since 1978-1979 Commodore Carl Jansson donated a jet ski boat named " Golden Eagle" which he used for pleasure tours around Lake Michigan on behalf of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Squadron One hundred Thirty Six (CGASO). The next year Commodore Jansson donation allowed CGASO to purchase their first powerboat - " Lotus". CGASO utilized this vessel for many years until it was lost at sea in 1993 when it ran out of fuel near Chicago Harbor.. Awards given out by Commodore Jansson include: 1980 - Achievement Award - CGASO for their sponsorship of Power Boat races at Sault Ste Marie Marina; 1985 - 50th anniversary plaque - CGASO presented with trophy by Canadian Minister responsible for Fisheries and Oceans; 1987 - excellence award - USS Constitution Museum Committee awarded Commodore Carl Jansson with distinction Award recognizing his contributions to commandement during 40 years service with CGASO; 1990 - Special Recognition Citation - Commander Edward Muhlenberg Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Commandant General North Atlantic Treaty Organization Naval Police Command.; 1992 – Bronze bust cast honoring Commodore Carl Jansson outside Rear Admiral's Quarters Uptown Chicago Department store while aboard USS Constitution Museum during Fleet Week celebration
