The Benicia Army National Guard was organized on October 15, 1881 when a group of local farmers decided toForm an organization to support the San Francisco earthquake. The unit was called the First Volunteer Battalion and served until 1898. It was during this time that the battalion earned its nickname of “the Zippers” because many of the men were recruited from the surrounding zip codes. In 1903, the regiment was redesignated as Company C, Third Infantry Regiment and later absorbed into the California National Guard in 1937. As part of World War II, Company C became one of two companies (along with Company G) assigned to Camp Pendleton for training purposes. After war ended, both companies returned home and disbanded on November 1, 1946. However, company C re-emerged in 1957 when it was reactivated at West Point Military Academy as part of their cadet program for future military officers. In 1974 all active duty members were discharged from service and all cadets were mustered out after one year; however company C continued operations through 1976 when it merged with another regiment at West Point known as The Golden Knights (later renamed The Warriors). Today, Company C is still active with its current name and barracks located at Fort George Wright in Benicia where it has been serving since 1978. The battalion has also participated in numerous peacekeeping missions throughout California including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Additionally, members have been awarded several medals including two Presidential Unit Citations and three Meritorious Unit Awards

The Benicia Army National Guard has been providing troops and support to the United States military since 1898. The unit was originally organized as a Volunteer Infantry Regiment in 1881. It was redesignated the 1st Battalion, Benicia Cavalry on November 10, 1907. On July 9, 1912, the battalion was re-designated as the 2nd Battalion, Benicia Cavalry. The battalion was again redesignated as the 3rd Battalion, Benicia Cavalry on October 15th of that year. The battalion served in World War I from April 1917 until August 1919 and in World War II from January 1942 until September 1945. On September 20th of 1945, the battalion became an inactive regiment with its assets being transferred to other parts of the military.
Benicia, California is a small city in the San Joaquin Valley of Northern California. The population was 6,959 at the 2000 census. Benicia is located on the north bank of the Sacramento River, about 39 miles (63 km) from Sacramento and 62 miles (100 km) from Fresno. The first European to visit what is now Benicia was Juan Bautista de Anza on October 25, 1769. In 1821 it became a part of Mexico and in 1848 it became an American state. The city's history can be traced back to 1824 when two Norwegian men named Larsen and Johnsen traveled through the area looking for land to settle. They found some good land but were not able to get it developed because there was no money available to buy it. In 1827 they met George Sylvester Morse who offered them a tract of land east of Benicia for $2 per acre ($10 per kilometer). This offer encouraged other settlers to come into the area and by 1830 there were over 130 people living in Benicia. In1835 James Fenton founded what would become Enterprise Bank which became one of the largest commercial banks in America. In 1840 he built his house on present day Elm Street near downtown Benicia as his home until his death in 1886. His son-in-law Cornelius Vanderbilt built a hotel next door which still stands today called The Commodore Hotel and Casino (now known as Riverside Marriott). In 1851 Jepson Paper Company started up with 200 acres (8 hectares) of forestland south of town along the Sacramento River where they erected their first paper millrace producing newsprint from oak trees that had been felled years earlier downriver at Mill Creek Falls just belowpresent-day DowntownBenicia . Today, Jepson Paper remains one of California's most iconic businesses and has been headquartered in downtown since 1966 Widespread Panic played its first show at Jepson Paper Amphitheater on October 12th, 1976
