The United States Navy has been deployed in various sizes and shapes over the years. This paper will focus on one particular navy deployment: the Azusa Naval Air Station (ANAS) stationed in California. ANAS is home to squadrons of American jets that conduct airstrikes against targets in Syria and Iraq. The squadron which currently resides at ANAS was activated on September 12th, 2006. The squadron’s first aircraft were donated by Lockheed Martin from their facility located at Palmdale, California. The Palmdale Squadron has since grown and now includes Mikoyan MiG-29 Fulcrum fighter jets, AH-64 Apache helicopters, Boeing 707 passenger planes, and Queen Elizabeth Class ships (USS Constitution (LPH-1)), USS Kidd (LCS(R)) and USS Porter (CVN 73). Since its activation, the Palmdale Squadron has conducted more than 1,000 operations with their aircraft flying an average of 49 missions per week. In March of this year they lost one of their pilots when his helicopter went down while operating in Syria; however they have continued to operate as normal with no changes to their lineup or mission plan.
