Azusa, California is a small town in Inyo County, California. It was founded by the Mexican Fork-Laguna Band of Mission Indians in 1849 as part of the Rancho San Antonio de Azusa rancheria. The town was founded on November 8, 1851 by Captain John Sutter and his family after they lost their cattle to a local winter storm. The first post office was established in 1865. Azusa's estimated population in 1890 was 890 people. By 1910, that number had decreased to just over 200 people. However, the city's economy would continue to grow through the early 20th century until it peaked during World War II when it created more than 1,200 jobs and produced $318 million worth of products exported from its factories. The city experienced significant growth following World War II; however, during this time period many residents began leaving for various reasons such as high taxes or difficult living conditions in nearby Los Angeles and Pasadena. As a result of these departures, Azusa's population dropped below 100 people for the first time since 1880 by 1970. This decrease did not stop however; as azusa annexed portions of neighboring towns like Dumont (1980) and Imperial Valley (1991), its population continued to slowly but surely decline throughout the 1990s and 2000s until it reached its current level of about 60 people per square mile (21/km²). However due to recent growth rates there has been an increase in Azusa's population since 2010 reaching over 100 people per square mile once again which should help keep its overall trend upwards
