Azusa, California is a city located in southern San Luis Obispo County, California. The population was 71,599 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The site of present-day Azusa was first occupied by the Ohlone people in 1821. In 1846, Mexican settlers arrived and founded Rancho Santa Margarita on what is now Lake Street. An ad for land to build a mission was published in 1849 and construction began that same year. The first missionaries were Father José Francisco Ortega and Father Miguel Angel de la Hoz. The mission was abandoned in 1851 because of lack of funding and it wasn't until1857 that a new mission, Nuestra Señora de GuadalupeMission RevivalApostolic Churchwas built on the same site as the original Mission Santa Margarita with assistance from Bishop Manuel Micheltorena. In 1870,Azusa became an incorporated city under state law when it merged with neighboring Fullerton and Vernon Heights communities to form the new City of San Luis Obispo. A fire destroyed most of downtown Azusa on December 15, 1906 and caused $10 million (2006 dollars)in damage; it remains one of America's worst municipal disasters ever. On October 24, 2009 voters adopted Proposition 209 which amends California's Constitution to add gay marriage to its definition as a right guaranteed by state law..
