Avenal, California is a small town located in the Mono County seat of Winton. It is about an hour's drive from Los Angeles and has a population of about 1,500. Avenal was founded in 1887 by John C. Avenal as a small community on the eastern edge of what is now Kern County. After two years, it was renamed Avenal after General George Bancroft Avenal, the first Governor of California. The post office at that time was named "Avenala". In 1902, Avenal became part of the newly formed City of Angels. In 1925, Cadiz College moved to Avenal and opened its doors there. A year later, Forest Service Headquarters moved to nearby Woodland Hills and both Cadiz and Forest Service vacated their respective campuses. Finally in 1969 when both agencies merged into the new Department of Forestry & Fire Protection (DFP), both campuses were combined into one campus known as "Avenala-Cadiz". The population increased rapidly during World War II due to the large number of military personnel stationed in Southern Californian towns like San Bernardino and Lancaster for training purposes. Many businesses were created around housing barracks called "battlefields" where troops would live while they trained or served overseas; many are still standing today including Joe's Pizza which still stands on Main Street near Highway 190 east of town square today (it closed shortly after the war). During most of this growth there was not significant development except for a few homes built along Hwy 190 between town square and Interstate 5 because people who owned land hereabouts lease it back to local government at low rates so that they can enjoy all that rural Mono County has to offer without taking up valuable real estate within city limits!
