Atascadero is a town located in the San Joaquin Valley of California, about 30 miles (50 km) east of Fresno and 120 miles (190 km) northwest of Los Angeles. The population was 7,782 at the 2010 census. Atascadero is part of the Fresno-Kingsburg, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The valley has been inhabited by the Tongva people for over 10,000 years. In 1821 Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded on Rancho San José near what is now Atascadero. The town was platted in 1872 when part of Fresno County. It became an incorporated city in 1928 and has remained an agricultural community with a large wine industry ever since. The first post office in Atascadero opened in 1870, and closed in 1911 because it was within five miles (8 km) of where most mail went to be sorted. The first telephone line arrived here in 1898! In 1906–07, local farmers banded together to form what is called "The Association for Better Farming" or BARF; its purpose was to encourage better farming practices by educating farmers about their rights and proper techniques. The association soon became known for its successful campaigns against spiking fields with lime or other materials to improve yield; this practice had been common up until that point and actually increased yields by as much as 20%. It wasn't until 1922 that voters passed a proposition allowing incorporation into the City of Fresno; this happened due to pressure from BARF members who were concerned that they would no longer have control over their community's affairs if they were annexed into another municipality - something they had lobbied unsuccessfully for since before incorporation even took place!
