The couple purchased the rifle from Remington Arms Company in Reading, Pennsylvania. The Kapps continued to own and use their Winchester shotgun until they died in 1984. In 1979, John Daugherty bought a gun from the collection of his uncle, Charles Daugherty, who was also a gunsmith and collector. After purchasing the gun from his uncle, John began to restore it and keep it hidden at his home until he passed away in 2013. The restored rifle is now stored at the Apple Valley Museum of History and Art. Beginning in 1937, Clarence “Butch” Hill started gifting firearms to individuals in Apple Valley. Hill was an avid shooter who enjoyed giving shooting shotguns as gifts to friends and family members. His generosity extended to handguns as well; he would often give pistols as gifts to people he knew were interested in firearm ownership. One such recipient was Mrs. Donatella Sommers (1912-2006), who received her handgun from Butch Hill in 1951 during World War II when she served with the United States Coast Guard stationed at Kodiak Island off Alaska’s coast. Mrs. Sommers preserved her pistol for many years before donating it to the museum along with other Firearms memorabilia on November 5th, 2006 (). In 1978, local resident John Daugherty becameinvolvedinthegungift phenomenon when he purchased a pre-owned Winchester Model 94 Rifle from Charles Daugherty., one of Apple Valley's most prominent collectors of guns (and father of John). Apple Valley is a small town in the hills of Southern California, located about 30 miles east of Los Angeles. It was founded in 1888 by John C. Appleton and his wife Clara, who named the valley after their home town of apple orchards in England. The first post office was established in 1889, and the first store was opened in 1890. A school was opened in 1897, and a church was built in 1904. The population of Apple Valley increased from 2,000 to 25,000 during the early 20th century; however, it declined rapidly during World War II due to military recruitment efforts and the effects of the depression. In 1951, Apple Valley became an incorporated town pursuant to state laws governing such matters; however, its residents continue to identify themselves as citizens of Apple Valley. The history of Apple Valley includes significant contributions made by individuals such as George Washington Carver and Edwin Ladd. Carver worked at a farmoutside of town for many years before moving to Northern California to set up his own business; while Ladd developed what is now known as Carver Park along with other friends on a piece of property near downtown Apple Valley. Today, Carver Park remains one of the most popular public spaces in Apple Valley – home to a variety of events throughout the year including music festivals and farmers' markets – as well as an important cultural resource for local students.
Apple Valley is a census-designated place in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 11,898 at the 2010 census.
