Antioch, California is a small city in Humboldt County, California, United States. The population was 5,612 at the 2010 census. Antioch is part of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the east side of the San Joaquin River and includes parts of Arcadia, Applegate Village and Oakdale. Antioch has been known for its agricultural production for centuries and has become an important center for winegrowing in Northern California. The city's history goes back to 1847 when it was founded as a cattle town by prospectors from Nevada who were looking for a new source of foodstuffs to provide their horses with fodder. The city was named after Greek god Antiochus of Syria, who had come to America in 1825 to find new sources of oil and irrigation water. In 1865, during the American Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant visited Antioch and saw that it had turned into one of the most valuable cattle towns in California because it supplied so much beef to soldiers on both sides of the war. After the war ended, many farmers moved into Antioch because they found good soil and easy access to water resources here than elsewhere in Humboldt County. By 1920s few people remained in downtown Antioch; instead most people lived around Arcadia or Oakdale which became more populous as farms grew larger closer to those areas due to improved transportation links between these two villages plus increased commerce coming through town along Interstate 5 (the original main road connecting Sacramento and San Francisco). Today there are still many businesses based in downtown Antioch but also numerous smaller clusters throughout its various neighborhoods including: Apex Court East-northwest corner near I-5 & Third Street; Business District south west corner next to First Street & Railroad Avenue; Airport Parkway neighborhood northeast corner off Interstate 580 just beyond exit 133A (exit 8 near Folsom); Mattole Hill southwestern edge near Sweetwater Creek

That same year, he introduced what would become known as "the death of espresso" – when he discovered that long ago an Arabica bean had been roasted too dark and lost some of its flavor while still being viable for brewing purposes. This change forever changed how we consume our favorite beverage; instant espresso became available only through roast plants that could handle darker beans better than earlier ones. During World War II, coffee production declined as many farmers turned to other crops due to scarce resources and harsh weather conditions; however, since coffees were such an important part of European culture during that time it did not go out of style completely despite this scarcity). In 1846, the town of Antioch was founded in Contra Costa County by citizens of Stockton. The name "Antioch" was chosen because it resembled a city in Syria. The first post office in Antioch opened on December 12, 1847. In 1850, the towns of Dixon and Brentwood merged to form Antioch. In 1857, Antioch became part of the new California statehood movement and won its own state Senate seat that year. In 1863, the state Assembly granted recognition to Antioch as a city and it became one of California's most populous cities with over 100,000 residents within 10 years. The downtown area experienced a period of redevelopment in the late 20th century with several high-rise buildings being built such as Bank Tower (1909), Great Western Plaza (1921), and Cottonwood Towers (1966). The downtown area is now home to several small businesses and restaurants as well as local art galleries and museums. The University of California at Berkeley was founded in nearby Berkeley in 1868 by students from Antioch who had pooled their money to help finance the university's construction. UC Berkeley continued growing rapidly during the 19th century thanks to generous donations from wealthy individuals and corporations alike. By 1940, UC Berkeley had reached its current size with more than 25,000 students enrolled across six campuses across three states – California, Nevada, Oregon & Washington – making it one of America's largest universities ever established.
