Aliso Viejo is located in the Angeles National Forest, within the San Gabriel Mountains. The town was platted in 1872 by a group of businessmen led by J.P. Morgan and James Fenton. Aliso Viejo became an agricultural community with citrus production becoming its mainstay. In 1925, Aliso Viejo was annexed into Los Angeles County, and although it retains some small-scale agriculture and forestry activities, Aliso Viejo has become a popular tourist destination for its picturesque streets, picturesque architecture, and rich history. The first European settlers to arrive in what is now Aliso Viejo arrived in the early 1800s on horseback from Mexico City. These pioneers were part of the Mexican Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico settlements that had been established throughout Southern California during the time of Spanish rule over California. By 1847 there were more than 50 families living in what is now Aliso Viejo; however, it was not until 1872 when J.P. Morgan and James Fenton organized a group of businessmen to plat out a town on land that they had purchased east of downtown Los Angeles at present-day intersection of Highland Boulevard and Lankershim Boulevard (known then as Lankershim Road). Initially called "Eagle Rock", the name was changed to "Alisalvieja" due to objections from local citizens who felt that it resembled nothing about their home state of Texas! moniker "Alisalvieja" stuck thanks to several efforts by locals to trademark or register the term with the US Patent Office between 1892 and 1896; all without success! In fact, one meeting held near where Highland Boulevard meets Lankershim Boulevard resulted in such lively discussion that proprietor Jens Jensen decided against wine making altogether but did bring his winemaker friend Christoffer Pohlmann along for taste testing purposes! After tasting some wines produced by Pohlmann's team at Rancho Mirage – including a sparkling wine made from orange juice concentrate – Jensen sold his interest in Eagle Rock Vineyards to brothers Julius & Max Klingler for $2 million dollars cash plus 5% interest per year payable annually! The Klinglers renamed their property after themselves – henceforth known as Klinger Ranch – while continuing grape farming operations which would continue until 1978 when they sold off all their grapes producing 1 million pounds annually! The ranch lost this distinction when Prohibition put an end to most American wineries’ production operations two years later! Although primarily an agricultural community through much of its existence, Alisalviejo did experience significant development during World War II as many businesses closed up shop due to lack of war materials or simply because manufacturers chose not To produce alcoholic beverages for fear thereof being banned under wartime regulations? Although most residents eschewed tourism during this time period due largelyto wartime rationing restrictions placed upon food items like citrus fruits) major attractions still remained: golf courses nearby Malibu Peninsula Golf Club & Solstice Lakes Country Club both opened following World War II while other leading restaurants like Nobu Matsuhisa’s Japanese restaurant moved into newly built buildings or converted old warehouses…the list goes on?!? It wasn't until 1967 when Valley View Drive finally opened up providing easy access onto Interstate 15 bypassing downtown which greatly facilitated shopping opportunities within minutes” (Hailey 2013).
