The United States military has been present in Aliso Viejo for over 70 years. The first Aliso Viejo unit to engage in combat was the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment on September 17, 1875. In 1916, the San Diego County War Memorial Museum and Library sponsored a series of exhibits called "Aliso Viejo: A History of the Marines" that chronicled Marine Corps activity in and around the city from 1915-1916. These displays also included items donated by local businesses and individuals. On July 20, 1942, General Douglas MacArthur arrived at Aliso Viejo Airport after flying his bombers throughima Bay Area en route to Japan. This event marked World War II's start as Aliso Viejo became an important strategic location due to its proximity to Japanese-occupied Southern California as well as its beaches which were accessible from both inland and sea. After two years of occupation by Spain (1855-1856), Mexico ceded all but Orange County to America on April 16th, 1858 pursuant to Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended their war for control over Texas and New Mexico east of the Rio Grande River following Mexican victory at Buenavista Creek against Anglo-American forces commanded by General John Custer at Churubusco Creek on October 15th, 1847 On February 14th 1870, San Francisco became Californias third largest municipality with a population exceeding 2,000 inhabitants when it merged with Santa Clara Valley including parts of what is now Irvine and Anaheim Hills

In 1853, Juan C. Aliso started Rancho San Miguel de Aliso Viejo, a ranch in present-day Aliso Viejo, California. The property now includes more than 7,000 acres of rolling hills and valleys that are home to many valuable trees and plants. In the early 1800s, this area was part of Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. After Mexican independence from Spanish rule in 1821, the United States purchased Rancho San Miguel de Aliso Viejo from Don José María Aguilar for $1 million in 1848. It was sold to James Waddell in 1861 for $2 million dollars. Waddell renamed it "Aliso Viejo" after his friend and mentor John Sutter who founded Sacramento County in 1850. The first post office at Rancho San Miguel opened on May 4th, 1860. At its height there were over 20 post offices serving the area including one at Chapultepec which is still open today! In 1865 the U.Sphinx Telegraph Company established a wire service between Los Angeles and Sacramento through Rancho San Miguel with an initial stretch of 116 miles! This legacy continues today as Cal State Fullerton operates UC Riverside's main campus next door on the same site! The ranch produced top-quality beef for transplantation into other states starting in 1865 when American Angus cattle were sent to Australia for breeding purposes; however, production ceased by 1880 due to high cost of feedstock and competition from other ranches near Los Angeles. By 1889 there were only five cows on the ranch grazing 1,200 acres! Today about 25% of all cowhide products produced in California are made here at Rancho San Miguel de Aliso Viejo! During World War II (1941-1945), many Armstrong Rubber Company employees worked on Rancho San Miguel while they manufactured rubber boat parts at their nearby plant at El Sobrante (now known as Northridge). These workers created some of California's earliest businesses such as Sprague Electric Boat Works (now Huntington Beach) which began making electricboats in 1938; Doheny Glass & Metal Mill which became Doheny Aluminum Corporation; Pasadena Tire & Rubber Co., Inc.; Western Electric Lineshares branch located adjacent to what is now Home Depot; Magna Carta Coffee Roasters - one of only two co-operative coffee roasters west of Chicago - opened its doors on October 29th 1941; later that year Pasadena Playhouse shared facilities with Pasadena Arena where live shows were also presented during daytime hours until 1965 when theater operations moved out across Century Boulevard south to City Hall Park adjacent to Veteran's Memorial Coliseum
