Albany, California is a city in the Central Valley of California and the most populous city in the state. The population was 207,921 as of 2019. It is located on the Sacramento River at its confluence with the San Joaquin River. The first Europeans to visit what is now Albany were Spanish missionaries who founded a mission in 1769. In 1851, it became part of Mexico when it was annexed during the Mexican-American War. In 1853, it became an American territory when it was part of Alta California. On February 14, 1850, Congress passed an act creating Fresno County and giving Albany its own jail and jailer’s office. The fortifications that once surrounded Albany were demolished in 1865 after General James Kountz conquered this area from Mexican forces during his campaign against Santa Clara County rebels. The history of Albany goes back to pre-historic times when human beings lived near or within sight of where the present-day Sacramento River meets the San Joaquin River. The first known settlement in what is now Albany dates back to about 10 A.D., when two groups of traders met at different locations along what is now I-5 and came up with a plan to trade goods between these two rivers for food supplies and shelter from weather conditions on their way northward across North America en route to British Columbia (Haida Gwaii). When news reached Spain about this new group of traders traveling northwestward through their homeland they sent word out to their Native American allies asking them for help in stopping these intruders before they destroyed all hope of trade between their peoples and those living east coastally! This request led to one of North America’s earliest military campaigns as early settlers fought against unfamiliar Indians while exploring areas that would later become Fresno County! In 1769, four years after Spanish missions began being established throughout southern Californias, Mission Santiago de Atacama was founded by Father Junipero Serra with support from Governor José Antonio de Velasco y Monterey on land grant given by Isidro Castro y Castro along parts of modern day Tulare County south of Madera Creek—a region then known as Rancho Diablo (later renamed Patagonia). With local assistance including Wintu people who helped build irrigation canals used for farming purposes, Father Serra soon had a chapel built andmission open for worship complete with 12 friars working here from 1771 until his death in 1793; three more missions were added over time: Presidión del Análisis de la Tierra (1775), Obispo Burgos (1807)and Nuestra Señora de los Dolores Missions (1819)—all located adjacent to today’s downtown core just east/ southeastof Market Street/northwestof 5th Avenue NE/southwestof Capitol Hill Blvd./northwestof I-5 which forms today’s eastern border with Sacramento City Limits…. During this time period there also arose another nascent community nearby called Adobe Village—founded by Captains Juan Bautista Aguilar and Manuel Nieto e Arellano shortly after Mission Santiago de Atacama opened—Mercado Adobe having been erected just west off present day Sutter Boulevard west side entrance drive…..the early village may have included some 100–300adobe tents scattered around high ground overlooking creek bed…. By 1800 adobe villages had largely disappeared due principal among them lack water availability combined with raids+invasions by rival Indian tribes….. However other precursor communities such as Donner Park existed until 1848…Aguilar party arrived May 21st 1800 wagons 1 mile long & 6 feet wide called Grande Encierro which means Great Hermitage…. By 1849 all but Donner Park had burned down (& donner post remains standing) leaving only remnants behind including Guardrail Cliff Built About 1840 landmark still visible today
Albany, California was founded in 1853 by gold prospectors. The town was named for General John G. Van Ness, who helped lead the California Gold Rush of 1849. The first post office was established in Albany in 1856. In 1865, the Northern Pacific Railway founded a line from Oakland to Albany. The town developed rapidly and by 1870 had a population of 775 people. In 1892, Albany became an incorporated municipality with a population of 2,100 people. In 1907, the city built its first municipal hall and began to annex adjacent parcels of land surrounding it. By 1915, the city had annexed all but 1/3 of what is now Albany County. The remaining area became part of Berkeley on January 1, 1916
