Alameda is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 105,208 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Contra Costa County. The City of Alameda was incorporated on February 14, 1892. In January 2017, Alameda's estimated GDP was $8 billion making it the sixth largest city in California and second largest city in Northern California behind Los Angeles. As one of the "City Beautiful" cities built around railroad lines and Ports of Oakland and San Francisco Bay, Alameda became an industrial center for manufacturing throughout much of the 20th century. However, as production declined during the Great Recession and new industries emerged such as data center computing, semiconductor manufacturing and biotechnology, many jobs have been lost to joblessness or moving away from Alameda to other parts of California or North America. In recent decades however there has been a revival in development along Railroad Avenue which bisects downtown: including a mixed-use development by Apple Inc., Amazon Web Services Headquarters 2 million square feet (1 million m²), Intel Xeon Processor Redwood City campus with 1 million square feet (100 m²) of floor space and 680 housing units complete or under construction;[5] office towers completed by real estate firms such as Blackstone Group LLC,[6][7] Pacific Gas & Electric Company’s Wantagh substation,[8] Kaiser Permanente’s Brentwood Hills Medical Center expansion project[9][10][11] etc.;[12][13][14] retail spaces being developed by especially large tenants like Jamba Juice Inc.[15][16][/17][/18][/19][/20]. The name of the island may derive from Spanish colonial era Alameda de San Francisco, meaning "Island of the Saints". The first Europeans to visit what is now Alameda were sailors sailing for Spain in 1542. The town site was discovered by George Gaspar de Portolà during his 1769 mapping of California. He named it Monterey because he found a small fort there; this fort later became known as Mission San Francisco de Asís (Mission Dolores). In 1821, part of Rancho Cucamonga was given to Mariano Castro and his brother José Real Castro for $1 million. They founded Alameda with land grants from Mexico City's governor Manuel Micheltorena. On November 12, 1825, the citizens of Alameda voted to be annexed into Contra Costa County.

These companies eventually became conglomerates known as "coffee houses". The 20th century was marked by several technological advances that helped increase production efficiency for coffees: - World War II led to an increased demand for military vehicles with high fuel requirements; this led to an increase in beans going into storage instead of being used for brewing purposes - Radio frequency identification (RFID) allowed grocery stores and other retailers to track inventory more efficiently; this led directly to increased sales due to decreased purchasing costs

In 1870, a railroad was built through the area making it easier for people to reach new settlements and jobs in Oakland County. The population of Alameda reached its peak around 1900 with over 20 thousand residents. However, following World War II there was an increase in migration from Asia and South America so unemployment began to rise; this led to a decline in population until the 1970s when there again became significant growth due to innovation job opportunities.
