Van Buren is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 3,718 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. It was founded in 1837 by fur traders and settlers from Missouri. In 1851, Van Buren became the capital of Arkansas. The citys first post office opened in 1851. The town grew quickly due to its location on the Arkansas River and its access to transportation routes. By 1865, Van Buren had become one of the largest cities in Arkansas with a population of over 100,000 people. The growth of the city caused development along both sides of the river which created new neighborhoods and businesses along Second Street between Union and Jackson Streets. During World War II, Van Buren played an important role as one of three United States military bases in Arkansas during World War II: Little Rock Arsenal (LAR), Fort Smith (FST) and Camp Powell (CPOW). LAR was used for manufacturing munitions while FST served as a training ground for American soldiers while CPOW housed initial Canadian troops who were deployed to help defeat Japan during World War II. In 1946, following V-E Day celebrations that took place throughout America, all military personnel serving within Laramie Barracks (later known as Fort Hood) were discharged into Van Buren through a process called "Operation Overlord". This event marked the end of World War II for general officers serving within Fort Hood and it also signaled an end to service at LAR where most officers who served before 1945 retired or left for other posts within ARGUSNATO after that date; this change began with Army General James Brooks who assumed command from Lieutenant General Omar Bradley on 1 October 1945 effective 1 November 1945 when ARGUSNATIUS Structure changed from Headquarters US Army Europe to theater commands with theater commanders reporting directly to Theater Commander USArmy Europe which Major General JB Brooks later became known as upon his promotion to lieutenant general on 15 December 1947 concurrent with his assumption command over Fort Hood). As such Van Buren provided much needed housing for dischargeees while also providing job opportunities for many local residents who had wartime experience or connections within their communities thanks largely in part to Operation Overlord which helped relocate numerous families out of harm's way during what has come be known as1945-46Arkansas Recovery Time period following V-E Day

Van Buren is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–East Stroudsburg, Arkansas Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to see Van Buren was Captain John Smith on July 14, 1671 when he charted its location on his voyage from Jamestown to Virginia. This early settler named it "Benton" after one of his brothers-in-law who lived thereabouts. In 1814, while warring with Mexico over the Gadsden Purchase (), General Andrew Johnson's army burned Benton and much else around the area before withdrawing to Arkansas City. In 1836 Van Buren became the seat of Pulaski County after that county was created from portions of Benton and Madison Counties. At this time it had a total population of 912 people; however by 1840 that number had increased to 1,691 following wagon road construction through the area which stimulated development and migration in many directions including Van Buren itself. In 1861 Confederate troops under General Robert Eickhorn burned down what became known as "The Old Fort" in downtown Van Buren; however this did not damage or destroy any buildings within downtown except for some destroyed furniture which still stands today inside what used to be The State Bank building (now First National Bank). This event marked an end to hostilities between Union and Confederate forces in Pulaski County as well as throughout Arkansas during the American Civil War era. A local business man named Amos Kendall purchased The Old Fort property in 1865 and began restoring it into a center for industry and culture called The Kendall House Museum today located inside what once served as courthouse Annex #2 on Court Street between Elm and Bellefontaine Streets across from Central High School (now Steele Middle School). This important renovation project helped stimulate growth in downtownVan Buren thereafter until present day when various businesses have occupied various parts of this historic district including: Colonial Williamsburg Inn/Diner; Brown Brothers grocery store/mall; Attorney General’s Office Building now home to NorthwestArkansas Legal Services Clinic; Masonic Temple #1 & 2 also now home to First Baptist Church (1872 - 1984) & First Methodist Episcopal Church (1901 - 2001); Highland Park Nursing Home #1 & 2 also now home to Heritage Manor Retirement Community (); Peoples gas station on Pryor Road near US Highway 281 also presently home to Empire Outfitters (& more) . The original courthouse annex #2 which housed both courtrooms has been replaced by Courthouse Annex #3 which houses all courts currently operating within Pulaski County with an additional courtroom being added adjacent thereto should future legislation authorize such addition . Accordingly since 1794 when organized government functioned within Pulaski County heretofore unorganized territory comprising most of our county situated east side up stream from river bluffs extending into Randolph County line having no town site appointed thenceforward either by act or resolution thereof we enjoy undoubted privileges granted us by statute law peculiarities never enjoyed by other counties where organization has not ensued subsequent thereto viz.: exclusive right incidental or remote jurisdiction acquired therein over towns situated east side up stream from river bluffs extending into Randolph County line without their consent nor apportionment thereof according as their number may vary
