The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Van Buren, Arkansas began its existence on November 1, 1921. At that time theVan Buren Volunteer Fire Department was organized and consisted of five men. The first captain of the Coast Guards Auxiliary was Captain John W. Fenton who served from 1921 to 1925. In 1926 Capt. George H. Olsen became the first captain of the Coast Guards Auxiliary in Arkansas and he served until his death on February 3, 1959. Then Capts Ralph Ainsworth (1957-1959), Clifford Erikson (1960-1963), and Wanda Lunsford (1964-1968) took over for Capts Olsen and Hargrave respectively until their deaths also on February 3, 1959, October 9, 1966, and September 15, 1977 respectively. Then from January 1st through December 31st each year a new CAPT comes aboard as part of the rotation process - thus maintaining continuity with our service people who have made such an impact during these many years!
