It is the seat of Johnson County and is part of the Arkadelphia–Texarkana Combined Statistical Area. The name Texarkana comes from the Choctaw word "terekka" meaning "a place where deer can be found." In 1881, three men named Haltom, Hudnut, and Smith traveling through southeastern Arkansas discovered what would become Texarkana. They called it Fort Worth because they thought it would be a good location for a trading post. The town was founded on November 30, 1881 by J.C. Whittaker with $2 worth of goods from Dallas to help support him while he built his rancho at present-day Texarkana. The first post office opened in 1889 and served as the center for trade and transportation between Texarkana and Little Rock until 1898 when Little Rock became an independent city under its own government. In 1907, Texas Western Railway began construction on a line from New Orleans to Texarkana which connected with the Transcontinental Railroad just south of town – making Texarkana one of the most important railheads in central Arkansas In 1924, American Water Works began operations providing potable water to all 200 miles of Arkansas including Texarkanas 25th Streetirts who were forced to boil their water before using it
