Paragould, Arkansas is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,478 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Ardmore city limits. The town was named after Captain John Paragould, who founded Fort Smith in 1819. The first settler in what is now Paragould was Augustus Hodge and his family in 1824. They built a cabin on the east side of the creek that would later become known as Main Street. In 1827, Isaac Gooding and his family moved to what is now Paragould from nearby Westville and platted their land off of what is now Main Street. Stephen Lyon also settled here around this time. In 1830, James Coker established a sawmill on the creek west of present-dayMain Street. This mill supported many early growth stages for Paragould with its sawmills producing lumber for local homes and businesses as well as munitions for military campaigns during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1875, J P Richardson acquired 640 acres (256 hectares) of land just west of town on the east bank of White River which he used to farm until 1907 when he leased it back to Moses Fenton for grazing purposes only; then it reverted back to Fenton’s control until 1924 when it became part of public domain following an act by Ulysses S Grant giving all public lands within Arkansas to private individuals or governments upon their expiration without being sold or leased back again; this property forms today’s northeast corner lot near Main Street and Richards Road A post office called "Parragon" was established at Paragold in 1865, but no mail ever reached residents there because wagon trains were not allowed into that area at that time In 1901 Dr G W Forster opened up Forster's Pharmacy which soon became one of largest pharmacies in Little Rock Mrs Lillie White purchased Post Office property northwest corner lot from Mr M Ransom in 1907 ; she turned it into her home until her death in 1971 . Paragould, Arkansas is a small town in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The population was 1,507 at the 2010 census, down from 1,611 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Little Rock–Arlington Junction metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881 by John Paragould and his father-in-law, Nathan Bedford Forrest, as a result of a land donation from Forrest's wife Aunt Sarah Noland. In 1892, Paragould married Belle Boydell and they started their own farm. In 1916, they built a Baptist church and named it after Belle's mother— Mary Boydell (1848–1926). The parish had 7 members when it first began services; by 1919 it had increased to 30 due to growth in the area around town. Belle Boydell died in 1926 and her husband continued to run the church until his death in 1978. He is buried there with his wife and three daughters: Bell Paragould (1929–2001), Sallie Byrd (1920–2002) and Shirlie Byrd (1924–2003). In 1990s several businesses were opened up around town including an auto parts store called "Grumble" which became known for giving away free carloads of new parts on special occasions such as Christmas or Easter; this tradition continued into the 21st century. A post office reopened in 2002 after being closed for over 20 years due to fire damage sustained during a storm that year; it currently offers mail service only during business hours (+1 501 962 3000). A high school named after Belle Boydell also opened up shortly afterwards but closed within two years due to low enrollment rates; it reopened as Whitehall High School & Middle School in 2007 which continues to offer classes through summertime while still providing community services such as physical education programs for children grades 6-8 along with choir rehearsal/performance opportunities for young singersature choirs throughout the year
