The airfield was used by the Army and Navy during World War II before becoming a USAF facility in 1951. The original runways were 9,000 feet long and 300 feet wide. In 1963, the Air Force transferred control of the airfield to the Arkansas Department of Administration which continued to use it for military purposes until 1987 when it became an unmanned research center. In 1992, as part of President Bill Clinton's National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1993, the US Congress passed legislation annexing Paragould Airport to Little Rock-North Little Rock metropolitan area. This made Paragould an incorporated city and made it one of only three cities in Arkansas that have city status. The Arkansas Air National Guard’s 106th Airlift Wing (106 AW) is the airlift arm of the Arkansas National Guard. The wing provides tactical airlift and refueling support to Federal, State, local and military agencies in the Arkansas area. The 106 AW flew its first mission on December 15, 1951. It was organized as a provisional unit on January 1, 1952 and activated at Paragould Municipal Airport. On February 9, 1952, it received its first aircraft- an F-51D Mustang. The wing served as an aerial tanker squadron during the Korean War flying missions over Korea using KC-135 Stratotankers. In 1957, the 106 AW became a fighter squadron when it received Republic F-5E skippers from the 4th Fighter Wing at Fairfield Air Force Base in Connecticut. In 1959, it redesignated as a wingspan unit with the serial number 511 AGS/AW. In 1960, it moved to Morehead Army Air Field and became a Tactical Airlift Command (TAC) affiliate unit under First Lt USAF Maurice J Gallagher Jr., who headed up TAC's Operations Directorate responsible for all tactical airlift activity within TAC Headquarters located at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton Ohio USA The wing also took part in exercises such as Northwoodsobbies and Southern Crossings which involved participating both nationally and internationally In 1966/1967 IAF had two detachments i n Thailand On October 8 1967 USAF detachment elements detached from RAF Lakenheath AB UK were transferred to RAF Leeming AB England while Aeronautical Missile Agency detachment element being reassigned from RAF Greenham Common UK was transferred to RAF Gwalior India before final departure of USAF contingent on October 14 1967 .During this time wing commander Major General James M Maxwell also served concurrently with Headquarters United States Air Forces Southeast Asia Region Commander On March 1 1968 Wing Commander Major General James M Maxwell assumed command of 106 AFW effective date 1 March 1968 he relinquished command due to retirement effective date 6 May 1969 Major General Maxwell died suddenly after only few months in command

The history of Paragould goes back to 1881 when it was founded as a post office by J.C. Goodnight and W.H. Hennessey Jr. The first store in Paragould opened in 1882 and the first school was built in 1889. The United States Air Force (USAF) has a rich history of giving back to the community. The USAF has given millions of dollars in Grants and Awards to various organizations throughout its history. Here are some examples: In 1965, the USAF founded the Central Intelligence Agency's first charitable foundation, the Agency Support Foundation (ASF). This organization gave away over $1 million in gifts between 1965-1970. In 1972, ASF partnered with the Ford Foundation to establish the Ford Foundation Aviation Giving Program. This program gave away over $2 million in donations to charity between 1972-1975. The USAF also established the USAF/NRA Joint Philanthropy Committee in 1980 to support aviation-related causes across both military and civilian sectors. This committee has donated more than $50 million since its inception. In 1984, NASA announced it was forming a Charitable Trust Fund which would give away unrestricted sums of money to selected charities each year. The USAF was one of many organizations who contributed to this trust fund. In 1992, NASAs Aerospace Industries Division created an endowed scholarship program called "The Aerospace Industries Scholarship Foundation". These scholarships were given out for students who had demonstrate exceptional economic or academic achievement in their fields of study at aerospace industry companies such as McDonnell Douglas and Lockheed Martin etcetera. Since its establishment, this program has awarded more than $5 million in scholarships. In 1994, after years of deliberations and discussions between both branches of government,NASAs National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced they were establishing a Charitable Trust Fund which would give away unrestricted sums of money annually to select charities. The USAF was one of many organizations who contributed to this trust fund - amounting to more than $100 million from 1984-1994 alone!
Paragould is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock-Fayetteville-Marietta metropolitan area. Paragould was founded on October 6, 1881 by A.J. Guthrie and his family as a small community named after Paragould, France. On January 24, 1906, the name of the town to be changed from Guthrie to Paragould was accepted by a vote of the people. The new name originated from French paratroopers who landed in North Africa during World War II and were known as "Parregoiliens." The first post office in Paragould opened on November 15, 1881 under the name of Beech Grove; it was renamed to its present name on December 12 of that year. The first settler in what is now Paragoudie Township was J.-A. Merritt who arrived with his family on July 3, 1884 from Tennessee Valley woolen mill Acworth Mill #3 (now Tellico Hills). For many years this community sat along Turkish Creek which emptied into Arkadelphia Lake just south of present day Highway 8 and east of where Interstate 20 crosses it today (the creek has been diverted for agricultural purposes). On October 6,1881 A.J.'s father AJ Guthrie set out three teams of oxen and wagonloads of potatoes to seek a new home for his young family near what would become Little Rock following local panic over an attempted Indian raid near nearby White Sands National Monument four days earlier In fact only two families actually moved into their land grant originally given them by President James Kenedy: Mrs Maynard & her husband John Noble may have also joined forces with AJ Guthrie but there's no record or evidence either one ever did so Further west still another group led by Simeon Wright had already started settlement at Red Spring when word reached them about AJ's move northeast Mr Quesnel eventually followed suit setting up shop beside Trinity Lutheran Church later known as First Baptist Church while others such as Hennepin & his brother John pushed westward trying to find more fertile ground . That same year AJ Guthrie organized a band playing country music called the Cotton Pickers which traveled throughout Arkansas performing songs like "I Shall Never landing Again" fronting such noted musicians as Pte Dewey Martin (the Nashville Boys) The Cotton Pickers disbanded soon after but left behind an abiding memory at what would become known as Green Gables Home Place which still stands today across Hwy 8 from where they played weekdays starting at lunchtime back then until almost 100 years later !!!!!

The first people to live in what is now Paragould were Indian traders who came down the Red River in 1824. They named their town after one of their chiefs, Paregoldo. A post office was established there in 1827 and it became a city on April 1, 1881. Houston & Texas Railroad built a line from Pine Bluff to Paragould in 1886. The railroad stopped at what is now northwest corner of High Street and Elm Street near present day University Park Boulevard.
