The original post office operated from 1885 to 1907 and was named for General James Wilkinson Maumelle who had been killed in action at Salamanca Ridge in Mexico July 2nd 1863 while leading an attack against Mexican forces under General Joaquín de Herrera y Costilla with support of Ulysses S Grant and MajorGeneral Edwin Ewell Butler). A store built in 1888 by John Meeks became one of the most successful businesses in rural Pulaski County and remains open today as First National Bank of Maumelle with over $100 million in assets as of September 2018 including real estate holdings across three states:Arkansas (), Oklahoma (), and Texas (). In 1886 President Grover Cleveland visited the area which included present day Maumelle when he stopped at Fort Smith to survey Indian Territory then still part of Kansas Territory; his first visit to what is now Arkansas - although he did not realize it at that time - served as a foundation for future relations between America's two cultures which would develop into what we know today as our two nations: English speaking people living primarily on one side while African Americans lived primarily on the other side of the country until integration happened almost 50 years later when both races were brought together through civil rights movements led by Dr King!
