Helena West Helena was born in 1885 in the town of Helena, Arkansas. She worked as a clerk and bookkeeper before she became a teacher. In 1957, Helena was elected to the Arkansas House of Representatives. From 1961 to 1965, she served as the minority leader of the House. In 1965, she was elected as the first woman senator of Arkansas. After serving for two terms, she resigned from her Senate seat to become chairman of the state board of education. Helena died in 1983.

Helena West Helena was a settlement in Arkansas, United States. It is located on the western bank of the Arkansas River and was founded in 1867 by Helena W. West, an American Indian agent. The town was named for Helena C. London, widow of Rear Admiral John A. London, who had served as the first U.S. ambassador to Russia and later became a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts. In 1870, HelenaWest Helena had a population of 100 people and it grew to 200 by 1875 when it acquired its own post office and school system. The town developed into a commercial center due to its location on the river's edge and its access to transportation routes such as the Oklahoma Mail Train and the Arkansas Southern Railway
