El Dorado, Arkansas is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 596 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1907 by General James Wilkinson and his family. The name comes from Spanish el Dorado, meaning "the gold country." In 1916, the town had 655 residents. The community takes its name from General James Wilkinson's discovery of gold near present-day El Dorado Springs on November 26, 1907. At first the location was thought to be an isolated stream because there were no other settlements within a radius of 10 miles (16 km). However, it soon became evident that he was not alone in this claim; others had also found gold and silver near present-day El Dorado Springs and named their discoveries after him such as Gadsden City (Alabama) and Springdale (Arkansas). Wilkinson's family first arrived in Searcy County in 1881 but soon moved to Pulaski County where they purchased land for a rancho called La Paz de Oro which later became known as El Dorado Rancho. During the early years of their residency here they supplemented their income by mining lead at nearby Eldorado Hill while intermittently prospecting for gold around present-day Arkadelphia. In 1907 general Wilkinson came across what he believed to be payable gold veins on his property just east of town along Elk Creek Road. After digging several holes totaling some 20 feet (6 m) deep he discovered an earthen wall with large lumps of yellow metal intermingling with quartzite boulders at depths up to 50 feet (15 m). This site represented one of the most significant finds ever made at Searcy County during that period; it had been previously thought that alluvial deposits lay beneath the surface only accessible through drilling or scraping for minerals when water levels were high enough to support operations. On July 6, 1907 General Wilkinson announced his find to local reporters who mobbed him outside his home whereupon he took four horses and went into hiding until further notice before returning two days later with $10 bill and three bagsfuls of golden nuggets which could be worth up to $1 million today if sold off at face value! The news spread quickly throughout Arkadelphia due largely to Captain Edward Hutton’s advertising campaign which began airing statewide over radio stations on July 12th featuring claims from various claimants including Generals Wilkinson and Harvey Goldsmith who stated that they too had locatedarations close by – original plans called for Arkadelphia itself to become the new capital of what would become known as “The Golden Age”of American Mining but circumstances changed after President Theodore Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 which prohibited any more federal assistance being givenohydrocarbon exploration anywhere within state lines without prior written consent from both states! As a result, much valuable property situated south of modern day Arkadelphia such as La Paz de Oro Rancho & Springdale ranches reverted back into private hands & El Dorados continued its development thereafter becoming one of America’s most highly respected shopping centers primarily due thereto its proximity To Major Cities Nationwide
