Camden, Arkansas is a small town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,874 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area. Camden is known for its white-collar industries and for its many shopping opportunities including two malls and two downtown areas. The first settlers in Camden were Methodists who arrived from Virginia in 1827. The first building in Camden was a log cabin that was built by John Aiken in 1830. In 1836, the Baptist Church was founded here by Reverend James Lickety Willingham and several others. The town began to grow slowly until it had a population of about 100 people by 1861. There were no schools until 1865 when a school house was built on the site of present-day Camden High School. By 1870, there were twenty-one businesses in Camden with $5 million worth of merchandise sales annually. In 1875, three men named Jardine started an oil well near what is now the corner of Main and West First Streets in Camden. This led to developments around this well - Jardine Well Fields which included fourouses (houses used as storage or work spaces) on each side of the wellhead where people could get fresh water from underground while drilling; retail stores; and social clubs such as the Masonic Lodge No 2 which functioned as a watering hole for workers during those days before public water supplies came into being In 1903, Camden became home to one of Pulaski County's first schools when Pembroke Female Academy opened here on North Second Street between Main and White Streets after plans for a convent failed to come together quickly enough funds were raised In 1907, Cottonwood Hall - also known as Cottonwood College - opened here after an effort by Drury Henningsen to found what would become Arkansas State University campus Here it remained until 1914 when it moved across I-40 onto FM 522 opposite modern day Arkadelphia In 1916MQM (National Municipal Corporation) took over management of all local government functions within Pulaski County following Reconstruction which ended with World War I During World War II many companies closed down due to wartime rationing however some managed to keep going like Vinson Manufacturing Company which developed aluminum products out of business ; USS "Arkansas" DDG 103 converted here into an auxiliary submarine depot service dock during WWII serving both Allied navies east coast US waters off New England & Labrador

However, over the next few decades Camdens economy slowly revived thanks to its location on the Arkansas River and its access to major businesses and industry in neighboring cities such as Little Rock and Kansas City. By 2006Camden had regained some of its former prosperity with its population reaching 25,000 people again. However, much like many other small towns across America that have experienced significant declines in their populations over time due to changes in technology or demographics (such as Little Rock), Camden is still struggling to come back from it recent downturns.
