The Blytheville Army Base, located in the city of Blytheville, Arkansas, was founded in 1896 and is one of the oldest military installations in the United States. Blytheville is a small town in Arkansas, located about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Little Rock. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. In 1930 Blytheville became the capital of Arkansascity County when it was moved from downtown Little Rock to its present location. In that year it also received its own charter as a city. The original City Hall building still stands today, although most of its original features have been lost over time due to deterioration caused by weather and neglect. Today Blytheville is one of the fastest-growing cities in Arkansas with an estimated population growth rate of 10% annually. Its economy revolves around agriculture and manufacturing; however, some recent redevelopment has brought new life to what had once been a sleepy community. In addition to many large businesses currently operating within the city limits including Lowe's Home Services/Auromere Inc., Verizon Wireless operations center and two restaurants (one Italian), several smaller businesses have sprung up along Route 66 since 2007 when construction began on Interstate 40 near Blytheville Village Mall which will include a six-story podium structure housing more than 100 retail stores as well as parking for 1,000 automobiles or more across three levels beneath an indoor Farmers Market setting with views of the Arkansas River below; this project should bring economic development not just for Blytheville Village but also for much closer to town satellite shopping locations including Walmart Supercenter – now under way – SuperValu Grocery - another under way – Old Faithful Brewing Company - already open - Planters Markets - opened early this year - Simply Grocery & Gourmet Cafe - plans pending - recently completed venture called 'Arkansas Live' bringing live music nightly to various venues throughout northLittleRock area
