Yuma, Arizona is a community in the Yuma County seat of Mohave City. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The name "Yuma" comes from an Apache word meaning "place where the sun sets." The town was founded in 1885 by miner George Fenton and his wife Lizzie. It first grew as a cattle ranching center but gradually became an agricultural center due to irrigation projects and other advances in agriculture during the early 20th century. The area around Yuma would be heavily Woodshed mined for coal until 1908 when large new mines were opened along Interstate 10 south of town. With increased transportation and production came high-volume housing development in what is now north central Yuma Township over time. In 1959, state Route 66 traversed through town, giving it a further boost as development moved out into what has now become east central Mohave City. Today, much of downtown remains undeveloped although there are plans for mixed use development on some parcels near University Boulevard and Highway 66 east of downtown; this would add another layer of complexity to the history surrounding this important intersection in town's growth and evolution. During World War II, Yuma played an important role as both a manufacturing site for munitions production west of Phoenix and also as headquarters for Army Forces Far East (AFAE). After hostilities ended, much construction took place here including establishment of AFAE's aircraft factory which manufactured targets for Operation Paperclip which led to Arizona becoming one of only two states to enter the war against Nazi Germany while its citizens remained largely uninvolved (the other being New Mexico). This facility produced planes used by U.S., Australian and Japanese forces throughout World War II with many notable wartime figures associated with Yuma including General Curtis LeMay who commanded AFAE during operations against Japan and later served as Air Force Commander Southwest Asia; Major General James Haggerty who served as Commanding General Northwest Pacific Area during WWII; Rear Admiral Charles Eames who headed American Task Force 84 which escorted MacArthur's army across Korea after Japan surrendered that year; Lieutenant Colonel George Weiser who developed airborne explosives warfare techniques at AFAE; test pilots William Boeing Jr., Jimmy Haslip, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin - all three eventually became astronauts - among others Today, most businesses within walking distance or less operate out-of-town locations such as Chipotle Mexican Grill or Subway sandwich shop; several major universities have their campuses located nearby including UA Pima Canyon campus just outside town limits on I-10 west of downtown (just east off exit 9 onto US 90), University Of Phoenix Bundaberg Campus across I-10 east off exit 204 (exit 283), ASU Tempe campus just south off US 86/US 88 southwest corner near old radar installation gates (exit 241), Prescott Valley Community College adjacent to Walmart Supercenter opposite freeway entrance on Thomas Road just beyond Prescott Valley Airport boundaries
