Yuma has been home to some of the most important events in Prescott Valley history and its economy. The area that now makes up Yuma was first populated by the Hohokam people who lived on what is now Heard Road and Jerome Avenue. In 1874, the US government sold land to Manuel Earle Cooke for $1 million dollars. Cooke built his rancho (land grant) called "La Mesa" on part of this land which he named after his mother's hometown in Mexico City – Yuma (then known as Nogales). Cooke also founded Gadsden Junction Coal Mine near present-day Gadsden Junction and began shipping coal there from 1875 until 1914 when all mining ceased because of health concerns caused by airborne coal dust particles created bycoalmining operations. In 1912, during a time when Prescott Valley was struggling economically due to World War I shortages of materials, William Tipton organized an effort to get money from New Deal donors to help revive the community. He solicited donations from businesses throughout Prescott Valley and gathered signatures from residents on petitions requesting $5000 be set aside for local development projects such as schools, hospitals and libraries; something that would take place despite resistance from then-Mayor Hiram Johnson because he felt it would only benefit those living north of Interstate 10 in downtown Prescott Valley instead of improving southern portions of town where jobs were available closer to home. After months of organizingefforts including traveling door-to-door within the valley and holding meetings with key leaders in Prescott Valley, Tipton received commitments totaling $21000 from 163 individuals/businesses within three weeks – more than enough money to begin developing various aspectsofthe community such as streetscape improvement, water systems installation and library construction even before Post Office building demolition started! The initiative proved so successful that it continued even after Johnson became Mayor in 1944; one reason being because Tipton had instilled into many residents a sense of ownership or responsibility for their communities which helped keep them motivated through tough times.
