In 1912, when Arizona became a state following the admission of California as well as other new states into this country through Proposition 8 (the " exclusion" amendment), Yuma remained unincorporated territory within Pima County with no governing body or rights under state law until 1912 when creation of a Territorial Board of Land Commissioners led by Assemblyman George Copley resulted in land acquisition for what would become the city limits today. As a result of this process and due to World War II efforts by local officials active in defense industries such as shipyards and aircraft manufacturing facilities adjacent to Interstate 10 (), many businesses have moved into downtown since then including banks and other financial institutions that occupy several blocks along First Avenue ().housing developments are also present around First Avenue South () but remain mostly undeveloped outside these boundaries; however there has been recent talk among some developers about developing some tenant-occupied properties inside these boundaries For most people living here today it has always been one big family town: There are numerous churches throughout town with services offered every day from 9am until 5pm; there are schools within walking distance for children aged 4 through 18 (including three private prekindergarten/elementary schools); there's even a library system! The Yuma Territorial Park and Preserve is located in the city of Yuma, Arizona. The park was established in 1912 as a first land grant to Captain George W. Pratt of the American Fur Company. Captain Pratt donated 9,000 acres (3 km2) of the present-day park to the United States government for public use. The first large natural area in Yuma was created by draining part of Apache Creek which ran through the town center. Captain Pratt’s donation included a military reservation known as Fort Sill which served as headquarters for U.S. Army forces during World War I and II. Today, Fort Sill is a National Monument and offers an opportunity for visitors to experience real-world military history firsthand from inside an amusement park complete with replica cannons and soldiers on horseback! In 1929, President Herbert Hoover designated Yuma as the home of the new Bureau of Land Management (BLM). In 1941, following World War II, Congress passed legislation creating Arizona Territory which extended into parts of today’s Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas. On February 14th, 1912, Governor John Hance submitted his proclamation creating what would become Yuma Territorial Park & Preserve when he listed it among 10 parcels within Arizona Territory that were being offered for purchase by America First Committee members primarily interested in developing irrigation rights around present-day Flagstaff Mesa – later called McCain Ranch – between Prescott Valley on the east side and White Sands Fault on the west side (the latter name given due to its proximity to international boundaries at that time). The first permanent settlement in what is now Yuma County was made in 1864 by prospectors led by John T. Morgan. The county was named for General David Yuma, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established at present-day Yuma on December 20, 1872. The first election for county commissioners took place on November 3, 1875. In 1916, a large fire destroyed most of downtown Yuma and left the town with only a few buildings remaining. The rebuilt downtown area today includes some of the oldest businesses in the city and retains its historical flavor. In 1920, the Northwestern Arizona Railway built a line through town that served as an important link between Phoenix and Tucson; however, this line was abandoned soon after construction began because of budget cuts.
