The military has a long and varied history in Yuma, Arizona. One of the earliest branches of the Armed Forces was the Mexican Volunteers who fought against Mexico in 1846. The Yuma Infantry militia was organized on July 1, 1880 and served as an adjunct to the Arizona Territorial Militia until May 21, 1912 when it became an autonomous unit. On October 15, 1912, the first peace treaty between America and Mexico was signed at Camp Goodwin near Yuma by Governor John W. Woolridge and General Victoriano Huerta. As part of that treaty, both sides agreed to end hostilities in Sonora region east of Tucson with mutual assurances for future negotiations. That same year saw the opening of what is now known as Camp Bowie which served as a Training Center for American Troops during World War I. Yuma City first declared itself a “City of Military Service” on December 12th 1916 when Mayor James Condon proclaimed martial law due to public support for the National Defense Act of 1916 which provided $1 million for armaments purchases by Army and Navy forces. On November 5th 1917 local Citizen Rufus Hosea Ladd made headlines when he proposed creating a volunteer regiment to serve alongside U.S. Marines in World War I under his leadership – one that would eventually grow into The Yuma Legion (later renamed The United States Marine Corps). From its inception until 1924, The Legion fielded two battalions each year with men drawn from throughout Yuma County but primarily fromamongstthe city’s working class residents who had volunteered their time and energy for their country during World War I effort In 1925-1926 there were only 8 enlisted members out of 111 total members present who mobilized along with tanks from Tank Battalion #5(now Marine battalion) that arrived from San Diego CA on January 25th 1926 . After 9 years service totaling over 2200 days/services these Marines left Japan aboard USS Lexington (CA-22) on September 6th 1931 after completing training at Naval Air Station Miramar California . Upon arriving back home they were redesignated Headquarters Battalion 3rd Marines headquartered at Fort Sill Oklahoma before moving to Yuma Municipal Airport where they remained until disbanding on December 31st 1941 following World War II

Yuma, Arizona is a small town located in Pima County, Arizona. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. Yuma is situated on the eastern edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area and is considered to be one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America. Yuma's economy depends largely on agriculture and ranching. The city has a rich history dating back to 1881 when it was founded as a trading post by silver prospectors led by James Waddell. Today, Yuma is an important cultural center for southwestern Arizona and its residents are known for their traditions, activities, and foods. The City of Yuma was founded in 1881 by gold seekers who were looking for new land to mine in what is now Pima County. At that time, there were no other towns within striking distance of Phoenix so settlers set up camp here to await word from President US Grant about whether or not they would receive federal lands east of the Salt River Valley under Apache Nation jurisdiction. In 1894, after many years of drought and famine that hit the area hard, Mexico granted Yaqui Indians land west of Tucson so this group too began looking for new land to farm and mine as well as start anew life in what would become known as today’s Pima County. In 1907-1908 Elmer Ladd opened his first store in downtown Yuma which became a popular spot with locals and visitors alike due to its close proximity to government buildings including county courthouse and jail which sat just two blocks away on Market Street (now Main Street). This location served as both business headquarters for Ladd’s company as well as meeting place for townspeople who came together to transact business or enjoy a cup of coffee while watching horsemen parade down main street during fair season or attend religious services at Second Mesa Methodist Church located across from what used to be Ladd’s store building (now Gadsden Mall).
