The Arizona Air National Guard's 5th Bomb Wing is responsible for the airlift of supplies and personnel to and from Yuma, AZ, a city located in the southeastern corner of the state. For more than sixty years, Yuma has been an important military installation for the Air Force and its residents. The city was originally founded as Goodyear Bluff by General Mariano Arroyo on December 21, 1887. The first airstrip was built in 1909 and during World War I it served as a base for fighter aircraft training. In 1942, Yuma became an air force installation when the United StatesAAF activated it as one of its initial major bomber units. The main purpose of the 5th Bomb Wing at Yuma has been providing strategic bombardment support to Joint Forces Command missions sinceactivated on 1 September 1945. Since then, the wing has furnished flying resources to numerous operations throughout Southwest Asia and Central America. When Operation Desert Storm began on 20 May 1991, Task Force 141 included elements of 42nd Fighter Group (Fighter-Bombers) based at RAF Mildenhall in England; 59th Fighter Squadron (Airacobras), which operated F-111Fs from Nellis AFB; 8th Reconnaissance Squadron (Vultures), which flew RF-4Cs; and 3d Tactical Airlift Wing (Airlift Command). On 25 May 1991, Task Force 141 consisted of 41st Fighter Group (Airacobras) based at RAF Coningsby in England with F-15As from Myrtle Beach AFB SC; 7th Airlift Squadron (Eagle Talons), which operated KC-135Rs from McConnell AFB; 4th Airlift Wing (Hercules), which operated C-130s from McChord AFB WA); 15th Rescue Squadron (Dolphinatics), which provided service relief flights for both ground troops involved in Desert Storm and coalition forces engaged within control areas established by Coalition forces following engaging Iraqi forces on 14 June 1991. Although initially limited to USAF assets only--the task force never carried out any sorties over Iraq--the USAAF later increased its involvement after Saddam Hussein's decision to attack Kuwait on 18 August1991 resulting in Operation Anaconda codenamed "Desert Shield". During this operation 99% of all USAF airstrikes were focused on targets inside Iraq while only 1% or so were directed towards Baghdad airspace... Yuma has long been a military community with active duty soldiers garrisoning installations dating back to World War II when local farmers organized themselves into companies that supplied soldiers with food they grew or raised themselves...Following World War II there was a steady increase in sophisticated weaponry being brought into use by both belligerents including nuclear weapons development efforts taking place at nearby SAC sites such as White Sands Missile Range...In 1957 Yuma joined Unified Services Air Command under jurisdiction of Strategic Air Command until 1966 when Alaskan Air National Guard detachment moved here permanently under command of Eighth Air Force....Since 1990 there have been significant changes taking place within our community including dramatic reductions in population due largely to new housing developments near McGuire AFB.....Today we continue our tradition as an active duty military community with men and women serving our country both locally & nationally....Yuma is also home to two major Army Reserve Commands stationed here: 9 th Infantry Brigade Combat Team - Arizona State University Rotary Club Trips Unit headquartered here between November & April provide Battlefield Experience through training exercises linked with Army maneuvers leading up to Warrior One! It is interesting that despite all these years since activation at Yuma ASNGC5 BW remains responsible for day-to-day operations while other commands may be inactive or working remotely...The mission statement really does reflect what we do day-in&dayout here: deliver combatsupport services via aerial refueling tanker/bomber power without having any impact whatsoever outside Joint Forces Commands LOCATIONS..This provides us unique opportunities not available anywhere else.......Our mission always includes safeguarding American citizens wherever they may be located.................We are proud members of Unified Services Aircrew Education Assistance Program where we teach elementary thru high school students how essential it is for their future...... Yuma, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Yuma is part of the Tucson metropolitan area and is the largest city in Pinal County. The community began as a post office on February 18, 1907. The name "Yuma" comes from the word yuma meaning "to cross over." In addition to its namesake river crossing, Yuma has several attractions that are popular with visitors including golf courses, shopping malls and restaurants. It also has a permanent U.S. military installation known as Camp Verde which offers activities such as camping and swimming for troops stationed in nearby Phoenix and Tucson.
When the United States Air Force was created in 1947, it consisted of just over 6000 men. Today, the USAF has an active duty force of more than 188,000 people and a large reserve component that numbers over 146,000 troops. The USAF operates more than 190 aircraft including fighters and bombers, as well as 450 helicopters and 500 boats. The air force is also responsible for providing support to Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. The USAF's history dates back to World War I when the army's Air Service was disbanded after a lack of response from commanders who felt that aviation would not be able to play a significant role on the battlefield. In 1916, General John T. Pershing ordered the creation of an air service separate from the army with 10 planes per divisional staff. This move signaled America's entry into World War I and showedthe importance of aviation in war. After America entered hostilities on April 6th 1917, President Woodrow Wilson ordered General John J. Pershing to organize and equip an air service with 100 planes per divisional staff which he did on July 1st 1917. On October 16th 1917 Congress passed Executive Order 9101 which established military aviation within the US Army by giving field commands responsibility for all types of aircraft used in war (this order eventually became known as War Department Order 15253). On December 11th 1917 President Wilson issued Executive Order 12123 which called for construction of four major airfields: at Chanute AFB in Indiana; Dow Jones Field near Ft Worth TX; RFC Whiteman Field near Omaha NE; and Armstrong Ground Station at Mesa AZ were these four fields would become operational respectively on January 17th 1918: Chanute AFB became operational as Wright-Patterson AFB while Armstrong Ground Station became Morey Field! colonel Denham soon took command at Dow Jones Field flying P-1s until May 1919 when he was transferred to RFC Whiteman where he flew GH3Ns until November 1924 when he moved back to Wright-Patterson AFB where he remained until his retirement effective February 1928! From December 1920 through November 1923 First Lieutenant Alfred Vail led a detachment funded by General Dynamics under Project Albatross flying FE2Bs nicknamed "Ducks". These flights were important because they demonstrated how effectively airplanes could be used for precision bombing operations against enemy targets beyond bomber range using high altitude photography techniques developed during World War One! By early 1924 First Lieutenant Vail had become commanding officer at RAF Fairford England flying DH9As/DH4Bs! On December 7th 1924 Second Lieutenant Clifford Berry assumed command of Squadron 896 AAF based at Alamogordo NM participating in photo reconnaissance missions over southern New Mexico during 1925Operation Nighthawks . During 1926 named unit activated their first Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron equipped with P-51Ds/N7s conducting aerial mapping missions primarily around Albuquerque NM operated outfitted by Second lieutenant Harry Esterhazy leading this squadron until early 1930when third lieutenant Edward Haggerty assumedcommand followed by captain Donald Dalebeck late 1930’s performing antisubmarine patrols off California coast using Catalina Class SMacks .. ...In 1933 Third Lieutenant James Fenton replaced Captain Dalebeck as commanderof Naval Torpedo Squadron Nine (VT nine) .......By 1935 squadron had been redesignated Naval Torpedo Squadron Twenty Two (VT 22) .....In 1936 Lt.(jg.) From its inception until its current day, the USAF has played a critical role both militarily and commercially throughout American history. Thanks to its active duty members and reserve components alike, today's USAF can provide necessary assistance wherever needed - no matter what hemisphere or conflict is unfolding.
On Dec. 12, the USAF deployed a gift to Kuwait in celebration of the country's first year of independence from Iraq. The gift was an American-made F-15E Tiger Shark fighter jet nicknamed "Haley".
Yuma is a city located in Pima County, Arizona. The population was 66,872 at the 2010 census. Yuma has been inhabited by the Koyotas since 1867. The area now known as Yuma was first settled by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1881. In 1907, the city was founded on land purchased from the Apache Chief Cochise. The City of Yuma grew rapidly during World War II with an influx of servicemen and their families who created almost 50% of Yuma's total population within six years post-war. During peacetime, however, growth slowed as residents turned towards suburban living patterns until a major revitalization project took hold after 9/11 when businesses became more active in helping to support infrastructure needs related to terrorism and homeland security threats. Today, much like its predecessor days, Yuma functions as a vibrant community with strong cultural traditions and a wide variety of recreational opportunities including golfing, fishing and skiing; all while still keeping close tabs on local events that bring people together for fun or education.
The town of Yuma, Arizona was founded in 1867 by Jesse James and his brother Henry. In 1912, the city was renamed for General Douglas MacArthur, who had helped lead the American forces during World War I. Yuma became a resort town after the opening of the Grand Teton National Park in 1902. The population increased rapidly in the 1920s and 1930s as people migrated to Yuma from all over America. The economy grew slowly until World War II when production of munitions increased due to military procurement. After that time, the city experienced a period of growth characterized by new housing developments, urthering its nickname "Growth City."
