Navy gift history in Tucson, Arizona is a long and complex story. The Navy has been here since the early days of Tucson, when it was first founded as an Indian trading post. Initially, the Navy operated out of private homes or Fort Sill. In 1865, the present-day Naval Air Station at Tucson was established and the Navy began using it as its headquarters. In 1912, Tucson became an incorporated city and the Navy moved into what is now the Naval Hospital Building on 7th Street. From 1913 to 1916, USS Constitution (CV-4) arrived in Tucson for repairs before she returned to duty in World War I. In 1922, USS Lexington (CV-2) arrived here after being damaged off California. On November 12th of that year, President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his speech calling for America’s entry into World War II and Congress passed an appropriation for $3 million to build four new battleships: USS Oklahoma (BB-38), USS Missouri (BB-39), USS West Virginia (BB-40), and USS New Mexico (BB-41). It wasn’t until December 1941 that Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and the United States entered World War II with forty shipsyards built around San Diego County including Mare Island Naval Shipyard where CV8 became America’s largest prewar battle cruiser ever constructed! The postwar years were difficult for both the Navy and Tucson – economic sanctions against Japan combined with moves by state legislatures to increase funding led to reductions in naval spending throughout much of the 1960s and 1970s. However, during this time there were also large outlays for infrastructure projects such as a new shopping center on First Avenue south of University Boulevard which opened in 1969; Riverview Park near East Valley Village; Mesa National Park east of downtown; and five new submarines ordered from Germany! During this time too there were numerous high profile military engagements including Desert Storm/ Desert Shield Operation[1] Commander Norman Schwarzkopf’s amphibious landing at Bahrein Island[2]; Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz USMC Confrontation at Kwajalein Atoll[3]; Andropov–Rumsfeld Meeting between Stalin & Eisenhower[4]; Nguyen Van Thieu Coup d'etat in South Vietnam[5]; Hurricane Katrina damage assessment report prepared by Rear Admiral Kathryn Stockett UHN [6]; Operation Neptune's Spear air assault against Cambodian targets – most significant engagement during Vietnam War.[7] However while these events received national attention they also had a significant impact on local life – many streets within walking distance of NMSA changed their name after engagements or deployments! The Tucson Naval Air Station has a rich history dating back to the days of the Spanish Empire. The air station was established in 1928 as a naval airfield and served as a base for American forces during World War II. It was also used during the Cold War as an important refueling stop for Russian bombers. In 1949, the navy leased land at the airport and began building an airstrip. That same year, Tucson became home to America's first jet fighter squadron,the 1st Tactical Fighter Squadron (1 TFS), which operated from nearby Vandenberg AFB. The 1 TFS played an instrumental role in defeating Nazi Germany in 1945 and helped bring about the end of World War II. From 1951-1957, Tucson housed America's second jet fighter squadron,the 2nd Tactical Fighter Squadron (2 TFS). This unit was responsible for defending Arizona against foreign threats and participated in multiple operations throughout the Cold War. The navy decommissioned 2 TFS in 1957 and transferred its control to the USAF until it was disbanded in 1981. In 1987, Tucson became home to America's third jet fighter squadron,the 3rd Tactical Fighter Squadron (3 TFS). This unit performed combat missions against Iraqi forces during Operation Desert Storm and is considered one of America's most successful deployments ever.
