Military gift history in Tucson, Arizona stretches back to the early days of the Republic when Austrian General Joachim Murat arrived in Arizona with his army in 1881. He founded the city of Tucson and began construction on what is now the downtown area. In 1885, Murat presented a gift of rifles and ammunition to Governor John W. Woolridge in appreciation for Woolridge's support of the new country during its struggle for independence from Austria. The military gifts that followed were typical of those given by veteran leaders throughout America at that time- arms, clothing, horses and other equipment. In 1912, General Pershing visited Tucson and gave a large gift of war material to the city government. That same year saw another significant donation- this time munitions supplies worth $10,000. This was followed by a donation of tanks and planes in 1916 which helped improve Phoenix's air defense system. The First World War brought increased donations from people all over America as veterans returned home to help rebuild their countries after hostilities ended. After World War I ended, much more general gifts were given- including money and goods for schools, hospitals and other charitable purposes. The post-war era saw an increase in military gifts again as soldiers continued to serve abroad or return home injured or missing limbs. In 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower presented a gift package containing 7 guns along with 8 rounds per gun to local police officers in celebration of Policeman's Day- an annual holiday recognizing law enforcement officers throughout America. It was during this period that Tucson also got its first golf course (the present one). Today there are considerable celebrations each year marking Military Gifts History Month here in Tucson! This led to development around Fort Defenestration (now south side Civic Center) including Tempe (already developed),mailsite (north side Higley Park) and first commercial development eastward along US 101 when mail service was established between Prescott and Tombstone in 1864 under contract from General Kearny’s Army during its campaign against Apache Chief Cochise

Tucson became an American city on November 16, 1912, when it joined the Mexican state of Sonora as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Tucson was originally named San Miguel de Tucumán after Monterey Bay where Spain established its first Presidio (military fortress) in 1776–77 under Governor Felipe de Neve y Gallegos. Englishman John Smith discovered Williams Peak on November 15, 1824 while exploring southern Arizona for his father-in-law James Humble and decided to name it Mount Graham after General George Washington's mountain peak located about twenty miles north east of Prescott,. In 1828 Alexander Gray made a discovery at what would become downtown Tucson when he found a wellhead near Whipple Street and Second Avenue. Gold was discovered nearby in 1848 but no settlement resulted until 1855 when Colonel Don Carlos Ruiz organized a group of 200 soldiers from New Mexico to explore this new goldfield and build Fort Concho which became known as Old Tucson because it sat atop much older ruins dating back to pre Hispanic times including an ancient temple dedicated to Coyolxahualcóatl or "The Flower God" located near Sixth Avenue West between Washington Boulevard and University Drive today known as Museum Row Historic District
