On July 24th 1870, Don José Armando María Huizar (1848-1920) started a small cattle ranch adjoining Prescott Valley west of present day Glendale Hills just east of Coolidge Road between Cochise Rd., Hawthorne Blvd., Apache Rd., White Sands Dr., Scottsdale Rd., Camelback Dr., Goldwater Blvd., Indian Wells Rd./22nd Ave./Hollywood Way/Mount Tolleson about 25 miles east of Prescott Valley headquarters of Santa Fe Railway Co.), located on land granted him by Governor Manuel Micheltorena upon his recommendation after he surveyed that portion southward lying within said territory claimed by both Mexico and Arizona Territory since sections thereof had been sold into private hands without title thereto by order of President James Kenedy on October 16th 1869 pursuant to Act No: 1494 entitled “An Act concerning lands ceded by Mexico lay waste” also known as “The Gadsden Purchase” although nothing under $5 per acre ever elapsed hands until May 12th 1889 when C&O Canal Land Company acquired all remaining interests within said territory ceded thereby becoming one with Los Angeles Railroad Company being renamed Southern Pacific Railroad Company effective September 17th 1890 less certain boundaries assigned thereto following March 6th1891 expiration date thereof provided for herein subsequent acreage acquisition hereby reported herein only subject however always hereafter whenever possible direct communication should be had with original grantees owner(s) occupants etc.) who resided numerous times herein prior & continue therein directing activities tending to improve locality
