Tempe, Arizona is a city in the state of Arizona and the largest metropolitan area in the United States. The population was 953,844 as of July 1, 2019. It is part of the Phoenix–Mesa-Scottsdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to settle in what is now Tempe were Hispanic American settlers who came from Mexico City in 1871 and named it La Paz after Mexican president Porfirio Díaz. In 1912, Tempe became a town when all of Maricopa County was detached from Phoenix County to form this new entity. On February 14, 1912, the Arizona Republic newspaper reported that voters had approved a resolution creating the Town of Tempe by vote of 3 to 0 with only one person not voting because he was too ill to attend. The original name for the community may have been Pinal Creek because many wells were discovered thereabouts during early development; however, no definitive proof exists for this claim and thus it remains uncertain which name would be more historically accurate given that both town names may date back multiple years before their establishment. In 1926, John Womack developed what would become Tempe’s first shopping center at Seventh Avenue and University Drive NW known as Scotts Valley Plaza. This shopping center was an immediate success and helped spur growth within the city limits over time. Additionally, Scotts Valley Plaza played an important role in helping spark civic activity within downtown Tempe through its hosting of annual events such as coronavirus awareness drives and chili cookoffs among others. By 1959, Scotts Valley Plaza had grown large enough that it needed significant renovation which included installation of escalators and other modern amenities such as a fitness gymnasium (later renamed ASU HealthTempe). Other popular attractions located near Scotts Valley Plaza during its heyday include Gila River Arena (now known as Talking Stick Resort Arena) on Maryvale Road east of Rio Salado Parkway across from Apache Junction High School; Joe's Pizza on Camelback Road northwest of I-10 just inside Gilbert Airport; Chili’s restaurant at 117th Street SW between Interstate 10 East and Indian School Road east of Glendale Boulevard; Peet’s Coffee & Cafe at 101st Avenue SW between McDowell Rd./ Apache Rd./Glendale Blvd.; McDonald’s restaurant at First Ave S/University Dr SE; KFC restaurant west side between State Route 16W/ US 90W/Arizona State Route 20E/Goodyear Rd./Thomas Rd.; Jamba Juice on Camelback Road southwest corner McClintock Rd./ Glassell Ave.; Nissan dealership on Mohave Rim Way east central Mesa
