When Tempe was founded in 1912, coffee was still a rarity. The area of Tempe that is now known as Downtown was only inhabited by the Native American tribe the Mohave and their cattle ranchers. Coffee wasn’t discovered until 1875 when Spanish Jesuit Father Francisco Marquez discovered an acacia tree near what is now University Drive and Eastern Avenue. Roasting beans for his morning caffeine fix, Father Marquez named his new discovery “El Dorado” after the gold Rush era king of California. The first coffee roasters in Tempe were Frenchmen who roasted bush beans for local farmers. In 1916, Italian immigrants opened Don Giovanni’s Coffee House on East Camelback Road which became one of the most popular locations for coffee in town. By 1925, three stores had opened: Don Giovanni’s, Mrs. Peake’s Cafe on University Drive and White Horse Coffee Shop on Western Avenue. In 1928, two Japanese immigrant businessmen started a small grocery store at Fourth Street and Vine Ave called Kawa-Dojo which later evolved into Pinstripes Supermarket chain today (Kawa-Dojo has since closed). In 1951,Tempe incorporated as a city under Arizona Constitution article 7 Section 1 Corporations Act et al., becoming home to some of the best quality coffee producers in America including Bob's Red Mill (now part of Starbucks), Peet's Coffee Company (now part of Dutch Bros.), Stumptown Coffee Company (now Partisan Coffee), El Dorado Hotel & Casino, Goldwater Brewery and Creamery among others With continuously increasing production capacity from its founders over time El Dorado reached peak production in 1980 with 2 million pounds produced annually bring[ing] some $2 million to Tempe market coffers However due to multiple factors such as recessionary impact loss from global commodity prices; bankruptcycies among some key growers/owners; competition from other Phoenix areas with more available land ; advances made in technology at this time - all things coming together - it appears that El Dorado may have slipped behind many other Tucson based roasters and processors during recent years…..
