The history of gourmet coffee in Tempe goes back many years, beginning with J.B. Hunt and his staff at The Brainerd Coffee Company. Hunt was one of the first people to appreciate high-quality beans from Sumatra and Java Province, Europe's top producers of these types of beans. Along with his partner/co-founder John Herndon, Hunt started The Brainerd in 1953 as a small business just off Interstate 10 in central Tempe. Hunt & Herndon quickly became known for their exquisite roasted coffees - each batch was handselected by their team of roasting experts based on both taste and aroma preferences. They soon began exporting their delicious beans all over the world, helping to revolutionize how people enjoyed coffee. After Hunt & Herndon passed away in 1984, their son Byron took over their business until 2000 when he sold it to Bob Peet's Coffee Corporation (later Peet's Coffee). Bob Peet's continued production of high-quality roasted coffees right here in Arizona until his death in 2006; his wife Jane then took over operations until her own death in 2013. Today, BobPeet's Legacy remains live thanks to several talented individuals who continue working day and night shifts at our Tucson warehouse - ensuring that every cup we roast is Standards set by our father before him!

The first gourmet coffee shop in Tempe was The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, opened in 1978 by Bobbi Brown and her husband, Rick. The shop served a variety of roasts, blends and espresso drinks. In 1984, the Brownes moved to their current location on Warm Springs Road. From 1984-1991, the shop was known as The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf II. In 1992, the store reopened as The Coffee Bean Shop under new management including co-owner Rick Brunner who would later open his own café called Brunner's Bazaar in Scottsdale. In 2006, Bobbi Brown passed away and her son Todd took over ownership of the business with his wife Sarah. At this time they decided to change their name to Gourmet Coffee Company Inc., which is still in use today. Gourmet Coffee Company Inc.'s first store opened in downtown Tempe on Maricopa Road near University Avenue on Febuary 10th 2007 and serve's drip coffee only. They also offer pre-packaged food items such as muffins, croissants and donuts along with brewed coffee made from beans picked fresh that day or delivered daily foragers can purchase from the cafe window .GCCI has since expanded into Mesa and Glendale AZ serving customers throughout Phoenix metropolitan area In 2009 GCCI celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a grand opening at ValleyFair Mall adjacent to Arizona State University - one of the largest university campuses within city limits - giving GCCI presence not only inside ASU but also at several other major universities across Phoenix metropolitan area
