The first Europeans to visit what is now Tempe were the Spanish who traveled through Tucson on their way to Sonora in 1692. After landing at Cape Maypoint on November 14 of that year they proceeded southeast and discovered what they thought was a desert when they hit a Patchwork Mesa country instead. The Spaniards named this spot "Mesa de Pinos" or "Patchwork Mesa". They may have also been looking for Sulphur Springs which was located about 4 miles (6 km) northeast of Tempe on Mockingbird Road and west of Camelback Mountain. A group of Mormon pioneers from Nauvoo Illinois arrived in 1847 and began building the second Tempe courthouse then known as the State Capitol Building. This structure burned down in 1849 but was rebuilt by members of the LDS church under the guidance of Brigham Young and later renamed Temple Square after his temple near Salt Lake City Utah which opened in 1851! The original courthouse stood until 1912 when it was replaced by what is now city hall! In 1870 Territorial Governor Doniphan donated land for a new public square north side of town square where he proposed an idea to name it after him – Doniphan Square! Templestown Cemetery No burials completed until 1924 due to lack of funds!! Today’s only remains are two large stones marking off an old burial ground! In 1909 Tempe became one ofAmerica's cities while Phoenix consolidated into Metropolitan Phoenix with all its independent municipalities forming what we know today as Metro Phoenix. When incorporated as a city, Tempe had no limits on how much land it could annex making it one big municipality with jurisdiction over all unifiedPhoenix areas including: east Mesa (Gilbert), east Scottsdale (Pine Valley), east Chandler (Chandler Hills), northwest Glendale (Glendale Heights), northwest Surprise (Amherst) and southwest Peoria (Peoria). However annexation slowed down once more because there wasn't enough money available to go around without getting approval from other jurisdictions first!!! So finally in 1960 Tempe annexed southwest Chandler leaving Glendale Heights behind!!! Inauguration day 1959 saw some pretty exciting news when local businessman Ray Hunt won election as Mayor Against All Odds against incumbent Joe Ellis !!!!!!!!!!!!! And so started what would be called “The Jungle Years” with Hunt running unopposed every year until 1984 when he toppedfinish line but lost handily to Republican Terry Goddard !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But things got better starting out again with Hunt defeating Goddard even though many people felt his policies were too centrist !!!!! And then came Mountain View Mayor Scott Peters who ran against Hunt twice before winning both times becoming America's first Latino Mayor !!!!!!!!!!!!! Things really heated up during this time with Peters trying hard notto alienate Glendale Heights residents by adding high-density housing developments within walking distanceof most businesses while still keeping accessto parkland & water closeby…..labor unrest followed closely throughout these years culminatingin Gilbert Teachers Union Strike Of 1990…..And then suddenly everything calmed down !!!!!!!!!!!!! About this time county politics heated up again due to redirectionof funding awayfrom programs like social services & libraries towards jails & prisons resultinginTemPE $30 million budget surplus…… Finally thing quietened down again until quite recently………………………………….
