Surprise, Arizona is a small town in Navajo County, Arizona. It was founded in 1881 by the local Kiowa and Apache Indians. The name Surprise is derived from the Arapaho word “saravaca” meaning "a place of concealed objects." The first post office in Surprise opened on December 3, 1881. In 1907, the town became a part of the newly created Navajo County. Surprise has experienced various changes over its history; most notably, during World War II it was one of 10 towns within Navajo County that received military supplies and ammunition from the United States government. After the war ended, Surprise experienced rapid growth as a result of post-war tourism and corporate expansions. However, during the late 1990s and early 2000s, economic decline began to take hold in Surprise; by 2006 it had fallen behind nearby Tomboy Valley in population and economic development. Today, there are only a few remaining businesses open in Surprisetown while other parts of the county have seen significant redevelopment which has led to new jobs for locals and increased tourism opportunities.
