Surprise, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area and is located about 60 miles (97 km) east of Phoenix on Interstate 10. The name Surprise comes from Spanish meaning "the place where the cattle are" or "a station on the old trail." In 1875 an event occurred that changed the course of history in Surprise: Indian traders traveling west arrived in what is now Prescott and were met by Hispanic settlers who had been sent to try to find a route to California. The Spanish word for cattle was chalaza and these new arrivals were so impressed with the amount of beef being produced in this region that they ordered their own herds added to those of their Mormon brethren back home in Utah. This led to the creation of one of America's oldest livestock markets when ranchers brought their animals into Surprise for sale. In 1887 railroad tracks were laid through Pinal County from Tucson to Globe and Surprise became known as "The Crossing". When the rails came through, local farmers began selling produce at various stations along the way including one near present-day Mesa Verde Boulevard and Camelback Road. By 1912, $1 million had been invested in telephone lines throughout Arizona andsoon businesses became interested in setting up shop here because there was no phone service within 24 miles (38 km). Today it remains one of only a few areas across America without cell phone service due to its location at an intersection surrounded by MRI scanners and other high-tech businesses. It officially became a city on November 15, 1912. The current name of the city is a Latinization of the Spanish word "surprise," meaning "a sudden or unexpected encounter." The first mention of Surprise in written history comes from Captain James Cook's exploration of the Pacific Northwest in 1789-90 when he named three small villages around Nome after his foundations: Fort Company (now Nogales), Fort George Vancouver, and Fort Defiance. There were no settlements located near present-day Surprise until 1867 when Mormon pioneers passed through here on their way to colonize what is now central Arizona. Fort Defiance was established at an elevation of 6,000 feet (1,800 m) above sea level and consisted of five adobe buildings with tents for up to sixty men. The fort served as a military post during the Mexican–American War and during Apache Wars against Mexico; it also housed an arsenal and storehouse used for munitions production by Native American warriors living around the area. During its time as a military post and later as a townsite development, Surprise had two hotels/motels: The First National Bank Building opened in 1907 and burned down in 1915; while Hotel California opened in 1912 and remained open until it caught fire on May 14th 1926 due to carelessness by management members; both hotels are still standing today but have been renovated into residential structures serving as bed & breakfasts.
