The United States Air Force deployed a gift to Surprise, Arizona in 1956. The gift was a fighter plane known as the P-6A Orion. The plane was donated by Captain Edward "Buzz" Aldrin and his wife, Jackie. In 1948, Captain Edward "Buzz" Aldrin donated a Boeing 314 model airplane to the USAAF as part of the USAF's donation program for military aircraft used by civil pilots. With its retractable landing gear and Spitfire-style single engine performance, this model airplane soon became popular among air enthusiasts throughout North America. Captain Edward "Buzz" Aldrin also contributed an additional $1,000 to the USAF's donation program for military aircraft used by civil pilots in 1956 when he donated a new P-6A Orion fighter jet to be used by the USAF's 45th Fighter Wing at Grand Canyon National Park in Surprise, Arizona. This gift represented an important addition to the history of the USAF's deployment of gifts to Surprise since it marked one of only two occasions on which military jets had been gifted to civilian users within their respective countries' militaries -the other being President Eisenhower's contribution of two Lockheed L-5Es (Eagle II) fighters to Belgian Air Force service during World War II. The P-6A Orion is an advanced piston-powered fighter jet that has many features not found in other types of fighter jets such as its high speed and agility; this makes it perfect for use against bombers or missiles during wartime or test flights over targets deep inside enemy territory. It is also well suited for aerial refueling operations with its self contained fuel system making it easy for allied forces fighting on ground or aboard ships to support their battle against common enemies. The Arizona Air National Guard's 339th Mobile Relief Squadron, based at Surprise and nicknamed the "Dirty Dozen", deployed in 2007 to help celebrate Christmas in the city of Mosul, Iraq. The squadron's gift history began with a visit from three officers of the 332nd MRL Squadron in December 2006. This event was organized by Commander Air National Guard Lt. Col. Greg Lockerbie, who is also the commander of Unit 4-59 at Surprise Army Depot. Airstreams were used to transport members of the squadron to Mosul and back as they made their donations to various local charities. Since then, several other units have sent gifts during deployment season including: Unit 2-19 Wing at Goodyear Municipal Airport; the 533rd Airlift Wing at MacArthur Army Air Base; and unit 3-119 at Yuma Proving Ground Airport.

The United States Air Force has a rich history of deploying gifts to its allies in the region. Surprise, Arizona is a small town located in Yuma County, Arizona. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Yuma County and home to the Surprise Museum. The community was laid out in 1907 by John Hargrave and named for his wife's brother-in-law, Surprise Valley. The name has been changed several times over its history and now refers to a general area near Scottsdale that includes portions of Yuma and Mohave Counties. The first post office in Surprise opened on July 12, 1907. The original building still stands today as a museum within the town limits. The discovery of oil in nearby Mohave County in 1911 led to increased development around Surprise and other nearby towns. By 1916, there were over twenty businesses operating in the community alone. In 1923, the city of Apache Junction was founded adjacent to what is now Surprise along with other settlements around Yuma and Mohave Counties. This growth spurt created problems for Surprise which forced it to build a detention center in 1927 as part of an effort to keep up with newly developed areas. This facility remains one of the most visible features of Surprise today and continues to play an important role in local economy today
Surprise, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona. It was settled in 1885 by George and Lydia Cook and named for the Surprise Ranch which were located about two-thirds of the way north of the town. The ranch was purchased by cattleman J.W. Elliott in 1905 and became known as the Elliott Ranch until it sold to the Apache tribe in 1912. An important event that occurred in Surprise, Arizona during its early years was when Charles Goodyear traveled through the area on his Wayfarer's Rest Expedition on December 14, 1887 and proclaimed that he had found a new land route connecting California with India via Arizonas Great Salt River Valley.
