Somerton is a small town in the Apache Nation area of Arizona, United States. It was founded in 1889 and has been located in the area since then. The name means "settlement by the Somerville people." The population was 1,558 at the 2010 census. The first residents of Somerton were Native Americans who lived on the nearby Pinal Indian Reservation. In 1887, a group of Europeans led by Alfred Vail arrived in what is now Somerton and established a mining camp called Fort Stockton. They started to prospect for silver near where present-day Navajo Road crosses Interstate 10. Some years later, they developed an irrigation system to provide water for their mines and also built a church and school. In 1914, when Arizona became an independent state, Somerton became part of Apache County. In 1934, about 100 settlers from Salt Lake City moved into what is now Somerton with hopes of opening up new land to farming around Monument Valley National Park. When that didn't work out, they decided to try again in Apache County with some new ideas about how to get around local obstacles such as rivers that could slow down wagon travel or difficult terrain that would make farming impossible. After some failed attempts at getting government help, they finally successful incorporate as a town in 1939 under the name "Somerville." The post office was established there in 1940 and it remained until it closed on October 25th 2006 due to lack of subscribership; however, it still remains open as an online archive available at somertontx dot com). At that time the population was 1,558 The economy of Somerville has always been based on agriculture because there are few other industries hereabouts besides ranching and cattle raising which have not become very profitable over time due to global changes (such as advances made in agricultural technology).
