Somerton is a small town in the Phoenix metropolitan area, located just east of the city and north of Phoenix International Airport. The population was 6,603 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Arizona Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1914 by John G. Somerville and his wife, Nellie Hetherington Somerville, as a dot-com town. The name comes from nearby Scottsdale and means "clear Creek Settlement." In 1920, John G. Somerville donated land for a railroad station and named it after himself – Somerton Station. In 1928, he sold his half interest in the station to Harry Chandler for $10,000. In 1951, Harry Chandler's son George Troup bought the remaining shares in Somerton Station from his father for $35,000; this made Somerton Station an incorporated municipality with its own government and school system). In 1957, Scottsdale annexed adjoining parcels from Somerton Township which formed Scottsdale Municipal District No. 2 (SMD #2). SMD #2 became part of Phoenix on December 11th 1959 when Phoenix Mayor Gabriel Garcia created new municipalities within Phoenix based on population size limits then in effect (Phoenix had 1 million residents while Scottsdale had 571 thousand residents). On December 18th 1959 Mayor Garcia approved annexation applications from Scottsdale Municipal District No. 3 (SMD #3) which included parts of what is now Pomona Mesa; Tempe; Glendale; Surprise; Cave Hill; Payson; Canon City and many other areas within present day Tucson Heights/Mesa Canyon neighborhood including much of today's southeast side of downtownPhoenix as well as most of today's northwest side including much of today's southwestside of downtownTucson Scottsdale Municipal District No.#2 Annexation application was filed on November 15th 1960 withland area being 7 square miles comprising mostly rural acreage between McDowell Road & Camelback Mountain Rd., south to Navajo Road Border Crossing & east to East Valley Rd., all Agricultural(Pima County) & McKellar Ranch water rights were sought along with some Single family homes built between 1958-1960 on lots currently owned or leased by Village Owners Association

Somerton, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 1,948 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Somerton was founded in 1907 by George and Lillie Morrison as a station on the Northern Pacific Railroad. The Morrions were early settlers in what is now Pinal County. George Morrison homesteaded the land that would become Somerton. The first post office was established here in 1907. The town grew rapidly during World War I due to the influx of military personnel and their families who were stationed here. In 1924, Somerton incorporated as a city and rapid growth continued until it reached its peak population of 2,000 people in 1940 census. After declining populations during World War II and postwar expansions of Phoenix, Somerton’s population decreased to 500 people by 1990 census estimates Somerton has experienced some recent growth since its decline during the 1990s: in 2003 it became an unincorporated community; in 2008 it accepted annexation from Phoenix; and most recently, it has seen significant redevelopment with new housing developments being built on undeveloped land adjacent to its downtown core The history of Somerton begins with George Morrison who settled this region back when Railroads ruled everything In 1907, he along with his wife Lillie started developing this property which would later become known as Somerton after they named their farm after a small village near where they lived previously
