Somerton, Arizona is a small town in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The population was 5,898 at the 2000 census. It is located on the banks of the river Camelback. The town was founded in 1887 by John and Emma Ladd and their three daughters. It has been called "the most diverse small town in America." Somerton is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. The community of Somerton was founded in 1907 by James and Emma Woods as a post office and general store on the site of what is now the townsite of Somerton Village. The name comes from Spanish "soma" or meal, and "tona" or place where it could be sold. One early settler, John Aiken, named his farm after his brother-in-law's family in England—Homesborough Manor near Hadleigh. In 1912, Anna Sims opened a restaurant called "The Gables", which became one of the most popular places to eat in Somerton. In 1916, local ranchers erected a large white cotton gin on land east of town that still stands today. This structure became known as the Somertonian Hotel and Casino; it housed a variety of businesses including an grocery store and five banks before being closed in 1984 due to financial troubles. In 1941, Gilbert Waddell started construction on what would become Somerton High School; he donated land for the school on which it currently stands. Waddell also built the first concrete building in Tempe with classes starting in September 1942. The school originally served grades 7 through 12 but has since been enlarged to serve allgrades (grades 11 through 12). At its peak enrollment during World War II, Somerton had over 1,500 students enrolled at six schools serving grades 9 through 12; however only about 100 students were actually attending school each day because many residents were working at nearby munitions plants during wartime production shortages!
