A post office was established here on July 7, 1871, and it operated until it was discontinued in 1907. The village grew slowly for many years, but increased tourism began to attract settlers in the late 1800s. In 1900, a railroad came through town and made Somerton an important center for agriculture; however, this period of growth ended with World War I. In 1925, $1 million was given by Mr. Jock Mahony to enable development of Somerton into a town; it became one of the largest single grants ever given to a municipality in Arizona. After World War II ended, there were efforts to revive the economy by developing new industries such as ranching and manufacturing; however these plans never reached fruition due to local resistance and lack of resources. Since 2000, there has been an increasing trend towards lodging and dining services coming into town; this has led to an increase in business activity which has created more jobs for locals. The town was founded in 1907 by John and Fannie Somerton as a community on the old Gila River Indian Reservation east of Tucson. The name was changed to Somerton in 1912 because it was located on an orchard owned by banker Samuel Sommers. In 1915 the settlement became a post office and in 1932 it became a city under the terms of resolution 3337 which consolidated all three towns within Pima County into one municipality. The first store in Somerton opened in 1907 and soon there were several others established throughout the community as people started trading goods with their friends and family back home. By 1916, there were four stores and two grocery stores operating within Somerton limits. That same year saw another bank opening up shop with $5,000 loan from J Lloyd George which has since grown into one of Phoenix's largest banks today with over $200 million in assets total! In 1927 an amusement park called "Fiesta" opened up just north of town along Hwy 101A & US 93 giving residents much needed entertainment during those tough times during the Great Depression years! It would be closed down by 1942 due to Japanese American internment but many memories still remain about that time including performances by Joe Bonamassa and Sammy Davis Jr!. This past year has seen some growth for Somerton as new businesses have moved into town despite having few jobs available here currently; this includes several restaurants/cafés/bars/nightlife options situated around downtown which will bring more people (and dollars) to our smallTown atmosphere!
