Somerton is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Somerton was José María de Urrutia y Aguirre in 1821. This route took him through present-day Cochise and Arizonas central region before reaching Tucson. The discovery of uranium in 1911 led to the development of this town by John Tatum and his partners, who had leased land from Apache Indians for the purpose. The name "Somerton" comes from Spanish "sonora," meaning "place where there are cottonwood trees." In 1912, Tatum donated land to build a school and post office here; it was dedicated on July 12, 1912. In recent years, Somerton has become an important center for research into nuclear energy and other technologies because of its location near two major uranium mines: Phelps Dodge's Comanche mine and Imperial Chemical Industries' Anadarko mine. Additionally, Somerton hosts a number of businesses associated with aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Martin and other defense contractors; these include Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Solutions Center (LMTAC), which conduct advanced engineering work for aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing Co., Airbus SA., and Northrop Grumman Corp.; Southwestern Economic Development Institute (SWEDI), which provides economic development assistance to rural areas throughout Arizona; Mesa Community College; and Centennial Hills Golf Course & Resort/ Casino. According to the 2000 census, Somerville had a population of 457 people; however that figure increased to 729 by 2006 when the community annexed parts of neighboring Villa Park As one result of this growth, crime rates have decreased while property values have increased in SOMERTON since annexation due to its strategic position within minutes' walk or bike ride of both major uranium mines

Somerton is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 539 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Coconino National Forest and it lies within the Prescott-Mesa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's first settler was George Hargrave. Hargrave homesteaded in 1885 and built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. He also founded a post office in 1886, which served as the community's main artery until 1912 when the name of Somerton changed to Prescott. Theodore Roosevelt made his home here while he ran for president in 1904 and 1908, though he never lived in Somerton permanently. In 1936, Somerton became one of only two American towns to be destroyed by fire (the other being White Sands, New Mexico). The blaze that burned through most of town was started by an unknown man who set a campfire inside an abandoned mine near Main Street. Despite this tragedy, Somerton has experienced steady growth over its years since becoming established as a community—thanks largely to its location within prime agricultural territory and easy access to Interstate 10 and state Route 66. Today, Somerton offers some unique features not found anywhere else in Arizona such as its own post office and telephone company; independent schools; and a wide variety of businesses including several hospital clinics, convenience stores/gas stations,eteriorament churches (including one that still stands),and several golf courses- all situated just outside the city limits on major roads providing easy access to Prescott or Mesa
