Sierra Vista is a town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson-Mesa-Phoenix metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Sierra Vista was Juan Bautista Martinez who arrived on October 27, 1873. Martinez and his wife María founded a small community on the bank of the San Pedro River about three miles west of present day Sierra Vista. Martinez named it after General Tomás Arias y Valdés who had led an expedition to defeat Spanish forces at Buenaventura on December 5, 1799. In 1886 Wm Fenton bought 640 acres (2 km²) east of Sierra Vista from Josefina Delgado for $1,000 cash and named it Fenton Ranch after his old friend and landowner there, George Fenton. In 1896 pioneer John Wesley Powell discovered gold near these foothills when he prospected for ore near present day Apache Junction; this discovery gave impetus to the early development of Sierra Vista as an agricultural center with irrigation rights over 3 million acres (10 km²). By 1912 significant economic development had taken place as businesses began manufacturing goods such as flour and cigars; electric light fixtures also became popular items during this time period. Sierra Vista was founded in 1912 as a small outpost on the Sonoran Desert, about twenty-five miles south of Tucson. The town quickly grew and prospered, reaching its peak in the 1920s. But during the 1930s, drought and other economic problems caused Sierra Vista to go through a dramatic transformation. First, many of the original residents emigrated to North America; second, new businesses sprang up in downtown; and third, some of Sierra Vista's most important civic institutions—such as the city hall and school—were built or renovated in response to growing demand. In 1939, when World War II began, Sierra Vista became one of the first American towns to open its doors to military personnel. Because of its strategic location on the Trans-Pecos River Valley (near both Casa Grande National Monument and Phoenix), it soon became an important military base. Throughout the war years, Sierra Vista attracted high-ranking officers and their families for various functions such as balls and dances. When hostilities ended in 1945, most of the military personnel returned home but a few continued to live in Sierra Vista until its closure in 1960. After several years of dormancy, Sierra Vista reopened as a small town once again with little change since its heyday more than sixty years ago. However, that changed on September 15th 1978 when Mayor Ralph Jahn announced that his city would be annexing neighbouring Pinal County into his municipality - creating what is now known as "Sierra Vista Municipal Services District". This move signaled an exciting future for Sierra Vista: although it would still remain a tiny community consisting mainly of elderly residents who can only speak Spanish at home (or interviews with them may be required before making decisions about public services), it would have control over much more than simply Its borders: it would become part of Arizona's largest municipalities – becoming something like Sacramento or Anaheim Hills – while also enjoying all the benefits associated with being part of a larger government entity including access to federal funding and jurisdiction over certain areas such as education and infrastructure development
Sierra Vista was founded in 1867 by the surveyor and landowner, Hiram Bingham. The town sprang up around a watermill on the banks of the Pima River, now known as Sierra Vista Park. In 1865, Bingham built a log cabin on what is now Middle Street. He named his new community after Mount Whitney, one of the most prominent peaks in California. The settlement grew rapidly and soon had a post office, school, and cemetery. In 1872-73, Bingham developed a irrigation system to improve agriculture in the area. By 1875, Sierra Vista had an estimated population of 100 people and two stores. A year later, it had grown to 1,000 people and five stores. The town experienced another growth spurt during World War II when military members arrived in search of new lands to settle. In 1945-46, Sierra Vista became an incorporated city under Arizona state law. During its time as an incorporated city, Sierra Vista compiled several impressive records including becoming one of the fastest growing municipalities in Arizona history; being selected for inclusion in both the Phoenix Business Journal's “Best Places To Live” list twice; and ranking second among metro Phoenix suburbs for economic vitality (behind Scottsdale). After years of progressivism with increased infrastructure investment by city leadership over decades culminating with incorporation into Arizona State government in 1995-96 – such achievements are no longer possible without continued public support from residents through Taxes & Fees paid by our citizens!
