The Arizona Air National Guard's (AANG) 164th Airlift Wing is the airlift arm of the Department of Defense. Show Low is a small town in Arizona, located about 25 miles east of Phoenix. The name originates from the fact that it was once a low-lying area and people would often take their Shows to show off their cattle. The stockyards are still in business today and are used for storage of agricultural products. The first settlers in Show Low were Frenchmen who arrived in 1872. They built a cabin on the west side of the creek which later became known as the Hotel de la Grosse Rue (The Big Road hotel). In 1888, Mr. Hatton founded the Hatton Manufacturing Company, which manufactured groceries and other items. In 1912, Harry Fenton took over management of the company and renamed it Show Low Manufacturing Corporation. Mr. Fenton is considered to be one of the early entrepreneurs of Show Low. In 1932, Don Lane bought property adjacent to what is now Main Street inShowLow and developed it into an entertainment district called "Lane's City." Lane's City included movie theaters, a bowling alley, two restaurants and several stores including J C Penney's department storeand Sears Roebuck & Co.'s new department store annexe on Main Street. The park that now occupies most of Main Street was built by Lane as part of his development plans for Lane's City. It includes a large Stadium-style arena with seating for 7,000 people which was used as an annual livestock show until 1984 when it was converted into an exhibition hall featuring classical music concerts and other events throughout the year
On October 29, 1912, the area now known as Show Low was founded by A.J. McDowell and his brother-in-law C.W. Tomlinson. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the mouth of the Salt River on the edge of what is now Phoenix, Arizona. By 1914, Show Low had a population of 230 people and was considered a thriving commercial center with trade ties to Tucson and Albuquerque. It was during this time that McDowell developed what would become his most famous invention-the McDowell peanut butter spread. The spread became so popular that it soon replaced Spread Eagle as the mainstay peanut butter products in Arizona.
