This new method called “French press” roasting required that the beans be roasted for hours at a time over an open flame, resulting in an even charring of the beans which produced a rich flavor and aroma.

In 1855, Major John Wesley Powell discovered Quartzsite (now downtown) and named it after his friend and mentor General Ulysses S. Grant who had led American forces during the Mexican–American War. In 1861, when Arizona became a state, Sedona was made a part of Los Angeles County with its current borders being established by Proposition 114 which granted land to Comely Township on both sides of Interstate 10 which bisected Tucson then divided between Los Angeles County and San Bernardino County about half way between Phoenix and Pasadena/Monterey Park; this land included most of present day Sedono as well as parts of Prescott, Window Rock, Songbird Mesa and Cottonwood Heights inside milepost 24 on I-10 south from Scottsdale across from Glendale Hills outside milepost 27 on I-10 north from Scottsdale). Sedona was founded on February 14, 1912 by prospectors from the Eastern United States. The town was named for Sedona, Arizona, which at that time was a part of Mexico. The first post office in Sedona opened in 1913. In 1925, the city annexed the village of Window Rock. The population of Sedona grew rapidly after World War II and reached its peak in 1960 with over 50,000 people. However, the population began to decline in the 1970s and 1980s as a result of traffic congestion and other factors. By 1990, less than 10,000 people lived in Sedona proper.
