The area that would become Sedona was first settled by Pinal and Apache Native Americans in the 1800s. In 1823, Colonel George Hinkle established a mining camp here to exploit coal reserves near Tucson. Mining operations stopped in the early 1900s because of low grades of coal and competition from other companies. In 1907, an agreement was made between President Theodore Roosevelt and Gifford Pinchot to build a transcontinental railroad through these parts. The tracks were finally built in 1912- 1913 but never reached Sedona because of Native American resistance. The only thing that has been built here recently is a shopping center called Towne Center which opened in 2003. Most local history takes place around the old mines or ranch houses that still stand today including: ghost towns such as Cochise City and Flagstaff; pioneer homesteads like Wells Fargo; schools such as Indian Hills Elementary School (1892), White Sands High School (1912), Sedona Junior College (1924), and Northern Arizona University (1964).
